Tamil Nadu youth traveling from Nagpur on foot dies due to fatigue in Telangana

A 23-year-old youth from Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district reportedly died of dehydration and fatigue in a temporary shelter on Wednesday night at Marredpally police boundaries in Hyderabad.

It is suspected that the youth travelled some 454kms from Wardha in Maharashtra to Hyderabad with 24 others from Tamil Nadu, at least some part by foot.

Namakkal Collector K Megraj said the deceased had been identified as B Logesh, a Pallipalayam diploma holder and resident, 55 km from Namakkal.

Since 14 February he has served at a private company in Nagpur. Stranded in the town after the nationwide lockdown, Megraj said on March 30 that he left Nagpur on a bus.

Locals in Secunderabad, on Wednesday night, however, saw Logesh and his companions walking towards Bowenpally and brought it to authorities ‘attention.

No new case in Nagpur for the fourth day

Nagpur: No other district in Vidarbha registered any COVID-19 cases on Thursday besides one confirmed positive case in Buldhana. Now Vidarbha has 25 COVID-19 cases with one death at Buldhana.

State health department named 30 hospitals as separate COVID-19 hospitals in Maharashtra on Thursday. Such hospitals are separate from government medical schools, where patients in COVID-19 are already being served. The list is composed of six Vidarbha hospitals. They are the Amravati Specialty Hospital (100 beds), Washim District Hospital (50 beds), Buldhana Women’s Hospital (100 beds), Wardha General Hospital (50 beds), Bhandara General Hospital MCH wing (80 beds), and Gadchiroli District Hospital (100 beds).

Currently, apart from the region’s GMCHs, COVID-19 patients may be quarantined or isolated at either of these hospitals.

Seven patients out of Vidarbha’s 25 cases have so far been recovered and discharged. There are currently 17 patients seeking care in the city. Of these, twelve are located in Nagpur, four in Buldhana and one in Gondia. They are all asymptomatic and perform well in isolation facilities.

On Thursday, all hospitals in Vidarbha received a large number of suspects as many members who took part in a religious congregation in Delhi were found and admitted to their respective hospitals. You now have 36 suspects at Yavatmal GMCH. Of these, 28 refer to the congregation in Delhi. They collected their samples on April 2, and were sent to Nagpur.

In Amravati, a special 5-day drive to test people door-to-door for cough, cold and fever was launched across the district from Thursday.

On March 22 a couple from Amravati tested positive for COVID-19 at Meerut (UP). Their family members are being screened in Amravati. One of the couple’s son tested negative while the second son’s study is awaited.

The district and health administration has opened a COVID-19 hospital in the Superspecialty Hospital building here as a forward move in the corona management exercise and has named a team of 100 to run it. Dr Shyamsunder Nikam told TOI today that this 100-bed hospital will become functional from Saturday.

He said that the staff assigned there will not be able to go home for the next 10 days, and will only remain at the hospital for full time. Also after 10 days here at the Prabodhini, they will be quarantined for 14 days. For the 100 beds, 60 would be valid for COVID-19 patients, and 40 for patients suspected, Nikam said.

The staff has undergone training and in case of need, the alternate staff of 100 will be available, he added.

Nagpur Stares Down Coronavirus Emergency After Quarantined by 9 Doctors

NAGPUR, Maharashtra: Nine doctors in Nagpur’s largest hospital, the Government Medical College, were put under quarantine after a patient admitted with cerebrovascular complications had concealed the fact that his brother, with whom he was in touch, was being treated for COVID-19. The patient himself later screened positively for coronavirus.

Nagpur GMC, founded in 1947, is one of two nodal hospitals in Nagpur to treat COVID-19 patients, and functions as a regional centre for the entire Maharashtra Vidarbha region.

The 44-year-old patient was admitted to GMC on Friday after a private hospital in the city turned him away. A resident doctor at GMC told HuffPost India on condition of anonymity that at the time of admission, the patient and his family were asked regularly if he had come into touch with any COVID-19 patients, as is now common practice in government hospitals. They denied this, however.

“Doctors blamed him on Saturday when he showed signs of cough, cold and fever because patients with cerebrovascular disease normally have no such symptoms. When the doctors pressed on, he revealed that after being positively diagnosed with coronavirus, his cousin had been admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College in Nagpur. At first, everybody in the ward wanted to thrash him but the doctors in the ward immediately moved him to the ward of isolation and sent his samples for examination, “the doctor said.

By this time, more than 30 GMC staff had come into contact with the patient, including physicians, nurses and other workers. The study tests on Sunday showed he had tested positive for the highly contagious disease.

The patient’s wife and son both tested Coronavirus positively and were admitted to GMC.

The richest state in India, Maharashtra, has now recorded 230 cases of coronavirus, the highest in the world. Nagpur has 16 instances all alone.

Although GMC has more than 1,000 doctors, there are fears that an increase in the number of cases – as faced by other countries that are ahead of India in terms of the trajectory of the disease – could soon overwhelm its staff, particularly if more people need to be quarantined. The hospital admitted 70 patients suspected of COVID-19 only on Monday itself.

More than 780,000 people worldwide have tested positive for the virus, which has infected over 37,000 people. Scientists have said the virus follows an exponential growth trend, meaning it infects more and more people increasingly with every passing day.

Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals employed by India’s overburdened public healthcare system have been operating against the wall with their hands as they attempt to combat the pandemic. Besides the lack of medical supplies such as masks and gloves, they also deal with community stigma and family, as well as concerns for their own health.

When patients conceal their past due to fear or ignorance, these difficulties increase manifold.

Flight Attendant Quarantined By Govt, Harassed By RWA: COVID-19 Brings Out Middle-Class India’s Worst Impulses First Indian Firm Allowed To Make Coronavirus Testing Kits Says Will Deliver Results In 2.5 Hours Coronavirus Updates: 10 Things You Need To Learn Today Doctors Concern A resident physician at GMC Nagpur told HuffPost India on condition of anonymity that for some unknown reason,

Additionally, all the doctors were quarantined in a hostel for GMC graduates, where they do not have separate bathrooms — as is recommended for people under quarantine.

“It raises the risk because they could end up infecting those who will be using the hostel’s combined toilets and bathrooms,” another resident doctor said.

Dr Sajal Mitra, GMC Dean, and Dr Namita Korwate, Deputy Superintendent, did not respond to calls from HuffPost India.

This is not yet clear if the other medical staff who came into contact with the patient have been put under quarantine.

A doctor who works at GMC said the hospital had requested the nurses and some other medical staff to conduct quarantine at home. But this is far from adequate, he said.

“What about those in the private hospital (where the patient went first) and drivers and health staff in the ambulance where he was taken to the GMC? This one man’s carelessness has exposed the whole department of medicine and a whole ward to coronavirus. Now, to make up for quarantined workers, doctors from other units would have to be taken out, “he rued.

NMC finds quarantine at VNIT hostels as Ravi Bhavan, Vanamati fills up in one day

Nagpur: Rooms at Vanamati and Ravi Bhavan with a capacity of 125 people filled up in a single day after officials quarantined a large number of people traced from the near contact list of Delhi positive patients issued by the state government.

The sudden rise prompted the health department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, which was tasked with identifying the perpetrators, to begin making new plans as the numbers are likely to grow higher in the next few days.

MLA hostels, where the first Quarantine facility in the city was built on March 13, took about 21 days to fill up its 210 room in Wing II and III. On Wednesday, Nagpur NMC health department started planning for quarantine facilities for the old VNIT hostels at Bajaj Nagar.

VNIT officials said the authorities had been shown 200 to 300 old hostel rooms but they had yet to obtain any official acquisition document. The campus too had been shut down 10 days before the declaration of the national lockdown. Students at VNIT were told to leave by 16 March. Several institutions have vacant hostels, like the University of Nagpur, too. VNIT has the capacity to accommodate over 4000 people including the new hostels.

SDO Shekhar Ghadge said Vanamati facility began on Wednesday but on Thursday it was complete. “Thursday, 35 people were brought to Ravi Bhavan. Vanamati can seat up to 84 people. Two are sharing a room at both places, “he said.

Ghadge said the administration was looking into options and was thus inspecting the VNIT campus. “We don’t need to buy any real estate. Before we turn a place into a quarantine centre we weigh many factors. The divisional commissioner and the district collector must eventually determine, “he said.

As the number of suspected cases unexpectedly increased, he said NMC had been tasked with finding and taking them here. On Thursday the MLA hostels, where about 30 rooms were vacant a day earlier, were packed.

Ghadge said many people will soon complete their 14-day quarantine at the MLA hostel so vacant rooms would be available.

Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar claimed the spike in a number of suspects was mainly due to the repercussions from the Delhi list and the congregation Nizamuddin Tablighi.

There were also questions at Vanamati and Ravi Bhavan concerning the housekeeping and catering services. Sources said the workers were afraid to attend to the alleged COVID-19 incidents.

Initially, the operator of MLA hostels too had faced the same problem but somehow managed to maintain 80 staff who are now deployed there in two shifts.

No new patient for second day in row in Nagpur

Nagpur: For the second day in a row on Wednesday, the town did not report any new case of COVID-19. On Wednesday, all 57 samples sent Tuesday tested negative. With no new positive event, Wednesday also saw a decline in the number of high risk and low-risk contacts.

Official statistics issued by the collector suggested that 65 offenders are currently admitted to isolation wards at GMCH and IGGMCH. Tomorrow their samples will be put to the test.

Besides Buldhana, where one new case of COVID-19 was confirmed, on Wednesday no other place in Vidarbha reported any positive case. However, samples from all districts started coming in from Wednesday after the state government received a list of persons who had visited New Delhi and Nizamuddin for the congregation of Tablighi Jamaat.

Divisional Deputy Director (Health Services) for Akola Division Dr Riyaz Faruqui said ten people had travelled to New Delhi from Buldhana, 14 from Akola, five from Yavatmal and 20 from Amravati in his division, attending the Tablighi Jamaat. “Most of them were marked and summoned to their respective district headquarters quarantine facility. They’ll be collecting and checking their swab samples, “he said.

Samples from Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Nagpur were collected, too. Most of those samples are scheduled to be checked on Wednesday and Thursday at the IGGMCH lab facility. With regard to Nagpur, on Wednesday 54 samples were sent for testing and the reports are awaited.

Village-level screening in Amravati Amravati Zilla Parishad has planned to conduct screening of all villages and towns in a 5-day exercise starting April 2, ZP chief executive Amol Yedle has told.

Talking to TOI, Yedle said the district has 84 major towns with a population of over 3,000. “Health officers at PHCs will regularly visit these cities and check for cough, cold and fever for elderly people, disabled people and others,” he said. Villagers are to be screened by auxiliary nursing personnel, Asha employees and Anganvadi sevikas.

“We want to screen every single person in the rural belt. We don’t have an issue with employees. About 95 to 97% of workers are on duty. Approximately 44 absent doctors and medical staff were informed and 39 responded by joining duty while we relieved two contract staff. A departmental inquiry is being carried out against three others, “Yedle told. The CEO said all of the district’s 59 PHCs are available, so there’s a patient rush at OPDs. Every day, the CEO said, most OPDs have a hundred patients more.

“We keep a close eye on people coming from other parts of the country and the economy, and even from abroad. We stamped them, tested the swabs in their throats and placed them in quarantine at home. No one has yet tested positive in the district, “he said.
