Nagpur: The highest Samai in the world lit to show gratitude to those battling against COVID-19

Nagpur April 6:-The world’s tallest Samai, Pooja Lamp, at Jerryl Lawns, was lit here on Sunday to express appreciation to health care workers and emergency service providers who are risking their lives to battle COVID-19.

City dwellers saw lighting candles and diyas to pay tribute to health care staff, sanitation workers and emergency service providers.

Citizens in various states of the country on Sunday switched off the lights of their homes and lit earthen lamps, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘9 p.m., 9-min’ call to defeat the coronavirus in the country.

The number of positive coronavirus cases in the country continues to increase. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 3,577 with 83 deaths.

PM’s call: Gadkari lights lamps with family in Nagpur

By lighting diyas in his home here with his family members, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari replied to Prime Minister Narendra Modis ‘call to turn off the lights for nine minutes on Sunday night.

The Gadkari family lit the lamps on the balcony of their home. “My family and I are lighting the torch of unity with the government. We’ve also made a solution to unity in this time of crisis,” Gadkari said.

Meanwhile, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat and General Secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi have conducted deep prajavalan ‘(lighting of lamps) at the Sangh headquarters here.

Most people in the city responded to the PM lights — by switching off the lights in their homes for nine minutes, and by lighting the lamps and candles in the galleries or on the terraces. Men even burst crackers in some cases. On Friday, Modi urged people to switch off the lights in their homes and light up lamps, candles or cell phone torches for nine minutes at 9 p.m. on Sunday to demonstrate the country’s “collective determination” to fight the coronavirus.

Coronavirus: Bronx Zoo Tiger positive results for Covid-19

A four-year-old Malayan female tiger at the Bronx Zoo tested positive for coronavirus.

The tiger, called Nadia, is believed to be the first known instance of a human infected animal with Covid-19.

The Bronx Zoo in New York City says the findings of the study have been checked by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.

Nadia, along with six other big animals, is believed to have been poisoned by an asymptomatic zoo keeper.

The cats began showing symptoms, including dry cough, late last month after exposure to an unidentified employee.

“It is the first time that all of us have learned anywhere in the world that a human contaminated the animal and the animal got ill,” Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the zoo, told Reuters news agency on Sunday.

He said that he plans to share the findings with other zoos and organizations studying the transmission of Covid-19.

Tiger King Star In Virus Isolation, husband says Pangolins carry strains related to the new coronavirus “We tested the cat [Nadia] out of abundance of caution and will ensure that any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world’s continued understanding of this novel coronavirus,” the zoo said in a statement.

Nadia, her sister Azul, as well as two Amur tigers and three African lions with symptoms, are all expected to recover completely, the zoo said.

Big cats had some loss of appetite, but “otherwise they are doing well under veterinary treatment and are lively, alert, and engaging with their keepers,” he said.

The zoo said it is not clear whether the virus will evolve in animals such as tigers and lions because different species will respond differently to new infections, but all animals will be closely monitored.

NMC says there are no onions and potatoes on temporary vegetable markets

Nagpur: Believe it or not, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), which has developed temporary 24 open-air vegetable markets throughout the city to support people during the lockdown, has prohibited the selling of potatoes and onions in those markets.

Citizens visiting the markets were surprised not to find potatoes or onions. The two are the most important vegetables primarily because of their flexibility and long shelf life. One can not believe that cooking without onions and potatoes was the general reaction of the buyers. Archana Raut, a resident of Reshimbagh, said that NMC had done a great job of setting up a vegetable market in Reshimbagh. “But I am not persuaded that their decision not to allow the selling of potatoes and onions is the right one,” she said. The decision would negate the lockout, as people will have to make another trip or visit another place to buy potatoes and onions, said Dinesh Palange, another local resident.

Kishan Balpande, a wholesaler of onions and potatoes, said he had been in the queue since 10 am to enter the Reshimbagh property. “The NMC officials told me that I would not be allowed there in the evening,” Balpande said.

While Municipal Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe was not available for comment, a senior NMC official explained the decision of the Civic Chief to help farmers sell new, perishable goods. He said that potatoes and onions were available in other markets such as Budhwari Bazaar, Itwari, Gokulpeth, Mangalwari etc. Chetan Bhagwan Kewte, a farmer from Dighori, expressed dismay at NMC’s decision to limit the entry of vegetable growers to Reshimbagh soil to only 60. Kewte said that, since most of the farmers supplying vegetables to the city come from the southern part of the district, they prefer the Reshimbagh soil.

The NMC official said that entry was limited to all 24 vegetable markets. NMC allocates tokens to farmers to do business in designated markets throughout the city, he said, adding that a decision had been taken to streamline the operation of all 24 markets in the area.

City Lockdown:  Unsung Water Warriors

Nagpur, Apr 01, 2020: –  Despite coronavirus scare across the city, there are many unsung warriors who are ensuring we stay indoors without any problem. They are the everyday unsung water warriors from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) who are working hard for 24xhours to ensure scheduled water supply to Nagpurians as well as entering in field resolving any complaints on priority.

Recently, a major leakage on 600 mm dia main distribution line near Shani Mandir, Loha Pool was plugged and water supply restored in many localities of Central Nagpur by such warriors before the scheduled time of emergency shutdown.

Further despite Corona threat, NMC OCW zonal teams are resolving on an average 100 complaints (pending and fresh) on a daily basis using all safety materials.

One of the valve man from Laxmi Nagar zone, who operates a valve from 4am to 12 noon at various places, said, “I ensure that I stay fit and fine so that I continue to play the vital role of supplying water to all Nagpurians. We took it as our moral responsibility to serve the society”

“Our responsibilities have increased as compared to normal working days. Even our seniors also encourage field teams especially supervisors and valve men by visiting at supply hours especially in the early morning or late night.

Amid coronavirus scare, we started feeling proud that we are real field soldiers who are supplying drinking water at Nagpur’s every tap,” he said when TOI spotted him operating a valve by wearing safety gear like a mask. He also carried a pass which mentioned that he is part of discharging essential services.

“Valve men play a vital role in the water supply system. Their day starts at 4 am and continues till midnight as they operate around 182 valves across the city for smooth water supply to every household,” said an OCW spokesperson.

Providing water supply to emergency establishments like Government Hospitals and other hospitals without any problem has been on NMC-OCW’s top priority list and NMC-OCW zonal teams are co-ordinating with all such hospitals etc.

Likewise, Rambhaau , a tanker driver from Wanjari Nagar ESR, said, “We feel proud as we supply water to slums wherein there are no taps. We have been provided masks and other safety gears. We visit people’s home during lockdown to supply water so that they stay indoors,” he said as NMC-OCW provides water in many non-network areas through tankers.

The NMC-OCW pressed 293 tankers and all the drivers into service and a similar number of helpers to have been provided with masks to stay safe while providing water through tankers.

Similar precautions are also being taken by 150-odd plant operators deployed at five water treatment plants – Gorewada (Pench-I, II, III), Kanhan WTP and Godhni WTP with safety masks etc.

Even NMC-OCW zonal teams deployed for maintenance and leakage repairing works are working or remaining alert in resolving no-water or polluted water complaints of consumers.

Under the leadership of NMC Municipal Commissioner Mr Tukaram Mundhe, NMC’s SE Shweta Bannarji & OCW CEO Sanjoy Roy appealed that, “We stayed at work to provide clean and safe drinking water at your taps right at your home. You stay at your home with family to keep the city and the nation safe.”

Other heroes include those who monitor the smooth functioning of the main pipeline.  They plug major leakages on pipeline and to clear technical snag at ESRs etc that develop during system operations, said the spokesperson.

Even the NMC-OCW surveillance staff team who takes care of bulk water supply from field too remains on toes. The 100-odd security guards too are playing a vital role to keep all the premises safe and secure.

In a bid to support social distancing as well as lockdown, NMC-OCW has already intensified online payment method. It has appealed to consumers to prefer online payment of water bills.

“Next cycle bills will be delivered on an average basis (no meter reading) and we have also stopped disconnection drive of defaulters,” the official added.

NMC-OCW has thanked and appealed all Nagpurians We stayed at work to provide clean and safe drinking water at your taps right at your home, to resolve your complaints etc. You stay at your home with family to keep the city and the nation safe. Mahesh Agarwal, owner of Haldiram Bhujiyawala-Kolkata, died in Singapore.

Mahesh Agarwal, the owner of Haldiram Bhujiyawala (Pratik Food Products), died in Singapore on Friday, just past midnight (as per IST). He had chronic liver disease and had been treated at the hospital there for three months. Agarwal had to turn 57 on Saturday.

In the present circumstances, the distraught family had to decide on the cremation of the body that did not follow the Hindu cremation method on Friday itself, in accordance with the laws of that country. Agarwal’s bereaved wife, Meena, and Avni’s daughter, who had been with him this time, are desperate to return home, but they find it difficult to do so in the current situation.

The duo’s mother and daughter have tried to reach the embassy by filling out an online form that all the Indians stuck in Singapore are doing. The country is expected to depart for a lockdown on Tuesday, and as a result of the news that Meena and Avni had been able to gather, the Indians were informed that a flight will be arranged to carry them back to Delhi in the early hours of Wednesday, for which there is a scramble.

“We couldn’t save the kid, but the business back in Kolkata was suddenly left orphaned, and we have to go back to save it,” Avni said from Singapore. Agarwal’s got a son and three children. The eldest son of Pratik is in Kolkata, the eldest daughter of Anchal is a physicist and works with Sandisk in San Francisco, while the younger daughter of Antara is studying mathematics and computer science at Durham University. Agarwal had a critical liver condition and was flown to Singapore in January, where the family had been told of a transplant. The operation was successful, but he developed an infection after he transferred from the ICU to a high-dependency unit.

“The infection caused by candida Auris, according to the papers we got from the hospital,” Avni said.

The family was told that because Agarwal died of infection, no chance could be taken off his last rites; the body would be wrapped in a plastic bag along with the tracheostomy tubes he was carrying and placed inside an electrical incinerator. “We had to agree … it was so heartbreaking to see him go that way … but we were helpless,” Avni said. Ashes have been stored separately and the family will be able to take the urn when they leave the country. “We learn that no flights/trains operate until 15 April. How to get to Kolkata … we are writing to all our relatives to communicate with ministers, officials, both in the centre and in the state,” Avni said.
