Wathoda Hospital Nagpur Delayed: Now Targets March 2027

Wathoda Super Speciality Hospital Nagpur Delayed by a Year: New Target Is March 2027

East Nagpur’s long-awaited government hospital will take a little more time to reach completion. The Wathoda hospital Nagpur delayed completion 2027 update confirms that the 300-bed super speciality hospital project being built by the Nagpur Improvement Trust will not be ready as originally planned. The earlier target of March 2026 has now been pushed to March 2027. The one-year delay adds to the wait for thousands of residents in East Nagpur who have been expecting this facility to provide them with much-needed government healthcare close to home.

What Was the Original Completion Target?

The Wathoda Super Speciality Hospital project was originally scheduled to be completed by March 2026. The state government had sanctioned Rs 187.71 crore for the nine-storey, 300-bed multispeciality hospital to be built by NIT on a two-acre plot in front of Jagewar Chandmari Temple in Wathoda.

The project had gained significant momentum after construction began, with NIT officials confirming the completion of two basement levels and laying of the slab for upper floors. However, the original two-year construction timeline proved difficult to achieve, and the revised completion deadline is now March 2027.

Why Has the Project Been Delayed?

Large-scale government hospital construction projects in urban areas typically encounter several categories of delays. These include procurement timelines for specialised medical-grade materials and equipment, coordination requirements between civil construction and MEP — mechanical, electrical, and plumbing — contractors, and the complexity of integrating specialised infrastructure such as medical gas pipelines, central sterilisation units, ICU systems, and lift installations in a nine-storey building.

For Wathoda Hospital specifically, the delay is attributed to the scale and technical complexity of the structure rather than any fundamental execution failure. NIT officials have maintained that work is progressing at a steady pace and that the revised March 2027 deadline is achievable.

How Much Has Been Spent So Far?

NIT has disbursed Rs 43.07 crore towards construction costs so far. The state government has released Rs 116.54 crore of the total Rs 187.71 crore project cost. An additional Rs 71.17 crore remains to be released by the state government for the project’s completion.

The structural work — both basement levels and the initial upper floor slabs — has been completed. Finishing work, interior fit-outs, electrical and plumbing installations, medical equipment procurement, and external facade work remain to be executed in the period leading up to March 2027.

What Facilities Will the Hospital Provide?

Once complete, the Wathoda Super Speciality Hospital will be a full-service government facility with 300 beds across nine floors. The hospital will offer general medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and emergency care. It will also house six operation theatres, 38 outpatient departments, 30 ICU beds, and 15 NICU beds.

A canteen for 150 persons is also part of the design. The building features rooftop solar power generation, green construction standards, a dedicated fire safety system, and basement parking for patients and visitors. This hospital will be the first government multispeciality hospital in East Nagpur.

What Is the Operate and Manage Model?

The hospital will function under an Operate and Manage model once completed. Under this model, the NIT-owned building will be handed over to a managing authority who will run day-to-day hospital operations. The exact managing authority — whether GMCH, IGMCH, or a private operator — has not yet been finalised. This decision will need to be made well in advance of the March 2027 completion to ensure a smooth operational launch.

Will the Delay Affect the Indora Hospital Project?

The Wathoda hospital is part of NIT’s twin hospital initiative. The larger Indora Hospital in North Nagpur — planned at 857 beds and costing Rs 575.79 crore — was at the bid evaluation stage earlier this year. NIT’s expanded capital works budget for 2025-26, which saw an 83 per cent increase over previous years, continues to fund both projects. The Wathoda delay is not expected to have a direct impact on the Indora project timeline, which is in an earlier phase of development.

What Does the Delay Mean for East Nagpur Residents?

For the residents of Wathoda, Kalamna, Zingabai Takli, and surrounding localities in East Nagpur, the revised timeline means another full year of depending on the city’s overcrowded central government hospitals. GMCH, IGMCH, AIIMS Nagpur, and Daga Hospital continue to operate at or beyond capacity, partly because patients from East Nagpur have no local government alternative.

MLA Krishna Khopde, who has been the driving force behind this project since its inception, is expected to continue monitoring progress closely to ensure the March 2027 deadline is met without further slippage.
