The riding of Aapli Bus dropped by 40%

Nagpur: Aapli Bus has dropped drastically as many residents tend to operate from their homes or stop using public transportation to limit their exposure to new coronavirus(Covid-19).

Against an average of 1,50 lakh per day, a daily number of commuters has decreased to 90,000, “a senior officer from the transport department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation reported. He added that there was also a drop in daily revenue from Rs 21 lakh to Rs 15 lakh.

Via three Red Bus operators and one female bus operator alone, the NMC operates 361 coaches on 112 routes. These busses fly over 80,000 km a day and take over 5,500 journeys a day.

Owing to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the consequent restrictions imposed by authorities, riders would undoubtedly see a further decline.

“We are not completely able to take the bus service away from traffic at a time when the coronavirus is so overwhelming,” said Chairman of the Narendra Borkar Transport Committee, adding: “NMC City Transportation Services is a lifeline for many people. When people do travel, you have to presume that it is necessary for the functioning or for certain purposes such as visiting hospitals, market places, etc…”We have actually taken two journeys each to guarantee social distance until March 31, taking into account the risks associated with a Covid-19 outbreak.

Borkar said that while the NMC operates Aapli Bus 361 on 112 routes and on seven routes, there is heavy-handed traffic in Kamptee, Kanhan, Kalmeshwar, Khaperkheda, Butibori, Ambajhari-defense and Hingna. He said much of the rush is seen during the morning and evening peak hours.

Furthermore, the Aapli Bus operators have already disinfected city buses twice a day.

According to the notice given on 17 March, the Department reset all appointments for the student license test booked until 31 March and up to next month. The department will take its permanent driving test for those with LLs expiry this month, while other slots for a permanent driving license check are also rescheduled for the upcoming month.

Channe also requested the department to include services such as driving license renewals, car registration, fitness certificate renewal and transportation car licences. The notification demands that services such as property changes, leases, etc. be halted before further notice. Channe also called on the department to stop all camps, especially student driving license camps, until 31 March.

The RTOs were asked to ensure that their respective offices did not rush. Inspectors of motor vehicles were asked to carry out vehicle inspections and other office-related activities with masks.

Forced holidays keep parents busy with children

Nagpur: As students find themselves in for a forced vacation due to shutdown, parents are forced to adapt to the situation and keep their children busy throughout the day. With restrictions on outside travel and public places, the task is even more challenging for parents. At the same time, all parents are enjoying the extra family time.
Dr Vaishali Khetrapal said the side benefit has been that all of them are spending more time together. “Though the actual reason behind this holiday is not good at all, we are enjoying this break as a family. Being a medical practitioner, I get less time with my family, but now we have made it a habit to have breakfast, lunch and dinner together,” said Dr Khetrapal.
Ahilyaa Taneja said indoor games have come to her rescue. “I play board games with my child and we have many hours dedicated to his study every day,” said Tanjea.
Amit Singh said it’s a mix of activities that keep his son engaged. “For entertainment, there are books, board games and educational videos. I also urge him to step out in the backyard and play for at least an hour. The main benefit of this shutdown is that he can spend ample time with his grandparents which is otherwise difficult due to daily routines,” said Singh.
Manish Puri said the holiday is bringing out the creative side of his son. “We are trying to occupy him with new paints and drawings as he loves that. We are trying our level best to keep him off the constant use of social media, and are making him occupied by online teacher training programmes,” said Puri.
Ujjwala Raut said it’s a difficult time to manage. “It takes a bit of doing because it is natural for kids to be attracted to TV, phone etc. But still, with a bit of thinking, we can keep them engaged in a productive manner,” said Raut.
Sheetal Sharma said she is encouraging her child to read more. “Instead of wasting their time on social media and video games, it is important to make the long days productive. Studies are of course important too. Due to this forced vacation, we are also getting to spend a lot of family time together,” said Sharma.
Shabhat Raza said the situation is unfortunate but this forced vacation has many advantages. “Those parents who are unable to spend time with their children due to their busy schedules are able to spend time with them. I prepare my child for exams regularly and fix time in the day for studies,” said Raza.
Sudha Raut said it was indeed a challenge to keep kids engaged all the time. “Due to this sudden vacations, daily schedule has been disturbed as there is no playing and all kids stay awake till late. We still try to keep them engaged in homework as tuitions are also closed, or any other physical activities at home only as it’s not safe outside,” said Raut.
Pooja Jichkar said she is simply enjoying spending time with her son. “We have a good time together and I give him some of the other work to keep him busy. When the schools reopen, there will be no problems and he will be back to routine,” said Jichkar.

Boredom and comfort: mixed feeling for senior citizens at home

Nagpur updates: For many senior citizens in town it is common practice to go for an evening stroll, accompany their grandchildren to parks or enjoy the fun together. Yet they are now rooted in the fear of coronavirus and are taking extra care of themselves as they are more vulnerable to infection.

Madhukar Banubakode, a goldsmith, has recently left and is bored by staying home all day. “I’m a fitness enthusiast and a workaholic. It’s hard for me not to see my friends every day as we do mass yoga, “he said.

His wife Vimla said, “My husband is at home most of the time. It’s very nice to me. It helps me cut vegetables and together we cook. We also go for a short walk in the evening nearby. “Ashok Mangalkar, a retired employee who lives in Mahal, said that being at home with children was really relaxing. “Mahal’s too crowded still. Everywhere there are traffic jams and people. I’m enjoying time with my kids and grandkids. I always spend the night watching tv serials, “he said.

Most senior citizens can not go to fun clubs and walk in town with their evening parties. Yet they manage to keep the virus away from their own techniques and tricks. “I drink hot water every day with neem leaves. After dinner under a tree in our town, I miss going to parks with my friends and talking with them. But it’s time for me to knit, cook and learn, “Jasoda Devi Khatri said.

Several seniors have even started taking yoga sessions in the morning. They drink herbal tea and use nilgiri oil as a sanitizer in their hands. “The majority of senior citizens have weak immunity. Strict steps must be taken. I use turmeric, homemade herbal tea and spend time with my grandchildren, “Parihar said.

Shortage of Mayo Hospital test kits delaying results?

Nagpur: The Indira Gandhi Government Medical University (IGGMCH) viral research and diagnostic laboratory in Nagpur, the only facility to test suspects from most of Central India, faced Tuesday shortage of test kits. On Wednesday, timely intervention by state governments resolved the issue and now the laboratory works optimally.

The problem came to light when the laboratory did not publish findings from sixteen new suspects admitted on Tuesday and four samples pending since Monday. Minister of Health Rajesh Tope also admitted that there was a lack of contact.

Tope said there was some issue with IGGMCH test kits, which were sorted later. “These laboratories need to transmit their kits to the Center before 48 hours,” he said.

Currently, 51 laboratories performing Covid-19 tests in the country receive these kits in the NIV Pune on behalf of the ICMR. As per the protocol, they must inform the NIV 48 hours in advance of the test kits.

IGGMCH Dean Dr Ajay Keoliya acknowledged the deficiency but also stated to be resolved following secretariat intervention. “This was due to a certain misunderstanding, but the issue was easily resolved. Tests have not been affected by the deficiency. In the last two days, the number of samples has also decreased. Both examinations are done promptly and thoroughly, “the dean said.

Many offenders agreed that they had to wait long hours to get their results while others had their results in a short time in government hospitals. Some offenders had to be in the hospital isolation ward for over 30 hours and others had tests of 6 to 8 hours.

TOI addressed how the test is performed and why it is delayed in some cases, with leading microbiologists in Nagpur.

“Diagnostic kits are available in different capacities between 100 and 500. But this does not mean a kit of 100 samples will be checked by one hundred, “a senior Nagpur microbiologist said.

According to him, one sample has to be checked on different parameters in accordance with the protocol. Re-tests are often performed to reconfirm the findings. A kit with a capacity of 100 can test a maximum of 20 to 30 samples. Laboratory technicians typically wait until this number of samples arrives before tests begin.

“Reagents and other package components are expensive. For one or two samples, we can’t waste the whole package. So, these measurements are batch-specific. For instance, if we set a batch of 20 samples, as usual, we have to wait for twenty samples. Once the batch count is done, the tests begin, “the microbiologist said. As a result, some samples are analyzed within 6 hours, while others take up to 24 to 30 hours.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the state administration announced the opening of more laboratories in Pune, Mumbai, Dhule, Solapur and Aurangabad in order to share the load of existing two-state laboratories. ICMR will supply these labs with 10 lakh kits. This will guarantee a timely outcome in the future.
