Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar RoB to Open June 28 — 4 Years Late, Bridge Ready for 2 Months but Stuck Waiting for Inauguration

Published: June 19, 2026 | Category: Nagpur Local | By: Nagpur Updates Desk

Good news for East Nagpur commuters — with an asterisk.

The Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar arm of Nagpur’s long-awaited railway overbridge (RoB) has finally been given an inauguration date. The bridge section will be formally opened to the public on June 28, 2026 — bringing partial but meaningful relief to commuters in East Nagpur who have been waiting for this infrastructure for nearly four years.

The asterisk: significant portions of the overall project — the Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar arms — are still under construction with no completion deadline announced.

The Bridge That Was Ready — But Not Yet Open

Here is one of the more frustrating facts about this story: the Wardhaman Nagar arm of the RoB has been structurally ready for approximately two months.

Two months. The bridge was physically complete. The concrete was set. But traffic was not allowed on it because a formal inauguration ceremony had not been scheduled.

This is not the first time Nagpur has seen this phenomenon. We reported earlier how the Indora-Dighori flyover Phase 1 was structurally complete but awaiting inauguration — during which time, frustrated citizens were even attempting unauthorised entry onto the structure. Infrastructure readiness and traffic access are separated by a bureaucratic and ceremonial gap that consistently costs Nagpur commuters weeks or even months of relief they could have received earlier.

The June 28 inauguration date is now confirmed. In nine days, East Nagpur commuters will finally be able to use this arm.

Four Years for a Two-Year Project

The Dipti Signal RoB was originally expected to be completed within two years of commencing work. It has now taken nearly four years to reach even this partial opening stage.

The delays have not been explained publicly in detail. MRIDC — the executing agency — is the same organisation also overseeing the Ajni Laxman Jhula bridge (which missed its pre-monsoon deadline), the Mominpura Y-shaped flyover (targeting March 2027 after years of delays), and the Jagnade Square flyover (which has missed two deadlines).

The pattern across MRIDC’s Nagpur portfolio raises consistent questions about project management, contractor accountability, and the adequacy of penalty enforcement for delays.

What the June 28 Opening Means for Commuters

The Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar RoB is being built near Level Crossing (LC) No. 73 — located approximately 1 km from Itwari railway station in East Nagpur.

Currently, this level crossing forces road traffic to stop whenever a train passes — creating delays, congestion, and frustration for commuters in the Dipti Signal, Wardhaman Nagar, Chikhli Square, and Mini Mata Nagar areas.

Once the June 28 section opens, commuters travelling between Dipti Signal and Wardhaman Nagar will be able to use the elevated bridge to cross over the railway tracks without stopping — eliminating the level crossing delay for this particular arm.

This is genuine, meaningful relief — even if it is only partial. Wardhaman Nagar is a densely populated residential area with significant daily commuter traffic.

What Remains Incomplete: Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar Arms

The June 28 opening covers only the Dipti Signal to Wardhaman Nagar arm. Two other arms of the same overbridge project remain under active construction:

Chikhli Square arm — work still underway, no completion deadline.

Mini Mata Nagar arm — work still underway, no completion deadline.

Both sections are described as crucial for the full functionality of the overbridge project. Without them, the RoB is doing a partial job — serving some commuters, but leaving others still dependent on the level crossing or alternate routes.

The absence of any announced deadline for these two arms is a concern. Given MRIDC’s track record on this and other Nagpur projects, commuters in Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar should brace for a potentially extended wait.

The Bigger MRIDC Picture in East Nagpur

The Dipti Signal RoB is just one of three major MRIDC projects in the Itwari area — and all three are delayed:

ProjectStatus
Dipti Signal RoBPartial opening June 28; 2 arms incomplete
Itwari Railway Station RedevelopmentNot yet completed
Itwari–Umred Railway LineNot yet completed

The convergence of three delayed MRIDC projects in the same neighbourhood — all originally promised on timelines that have long passed — is a matter that elected representatives from the Itwari, Wardhaman Nagar, and Chikhli areas should be pressing MRIDC to address publicly and transparently.

Q: When will the Dipti Signal–Wardhaman Nagar bridge open? The formal inauguration is scheduled for June 28, 2026. Commuters can expect the bridge to be open to traffic on or after that date.

Q: Which section is opening on June 28? Only the Dipti Signal to Wardhaman Nagar arm of the railway overbridge is being inaugurated. The Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar arms remain under construction.

Q: Why was the bridge not opened earlier if it was ready? The Wardhaman Nagar arm has reportedly been structurally ready for approximately two months but traffic was not permitted pending a formal inauguration ceremony.

Q: When will the Chikhli Square and Mini Mata Nagar arms open? No deadline has been announced. Construction is underway on both arms.

Q: Will this RoB replace the level crossing at LC 73? Yes — once the full project is complete, it will eliminate Level Crossing No. 73 near Itwari station, removing a significant traffic delay point in East Nagpur.

Q: Which agency is building the Dipti Signal RoB? MRIDC — Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, which is also executing the Itwari station redevelopment and Itwari–Umred railway line projects.
