Futala Fountain Tricolor Glow on Independence Day: 250 Italian LED Lights Switch On August 15

Nagpur’s iconic Futala Lake is getting a special Independence Day moment. The Futala Musical Fountain will glow in the colours of the tricolour on August 15, 2026. Furthermore, 250 high-performance LED lights imported from Italy will switch on for the first time that evening. In addition, a specially curated Patriotic Medley of Bollywood songs will play alongside the light display.

However, this will not be a public show. The viewing gallery remains closed as restoration work is still underway. Therefore, this Independence Day display is a technical preview — a glimpse of what Nagpur residents can expect once the full fountain restoration is complete.

What Will Happen at Futala on August 15

The evening of Independence Day will see Futala Lake illuminate in red, white and green — the colours of the national flag. Furthermore, the lighting will be precisely programmed to match the flag’s colours in sequence.

Alphonse Roy, the cinematographer and technical director of the Futala project, confirmed the details. He said the display will be a purely light-and-sound presentation. Moreover, he explained that the water pumps are expected to arrive after August 15. Therefore, the fountains will not be running yet on Independence Day.

“We have put together a medley of Bollywood patriotic songs, including ‘Jai Ho’ and others,” Roy said. Furthermore, the lighting will be programmed around the songs in real time. As a result, Nagpur residents will get their first look at the sophisticated light-and-sound infrastructure being built at Futala.

Why These Lights Are Special — RGBA Technology Explained

The 250 LED fixtures installed at Futala are not ordinary lights. Furthermore, they are custom RGBA lights — meaning red, green, blue and amber combined in a single fixture.

Most conventional lights use only RGB — red, green and blue. However, the additional amber channel in RGBA technology makes a significant difference. It broadens the overall colour spectrum available. Moreover, it allows warmer shades to be reproduced more naturally and accurately.

For a tricolour display, this matters enormously. The saffron colour in the Indian flag is a warm tone. Conventional RGB lights struggle to reproduce warm saffron accurately. However, the amber channel in RGBA fixtures solves this problem completely. As a result, the tricolour display at Futala will look true and vivid — not a pale approximation of the flag’s actual colours.

Furthermore, all 250 fixtures are imported from Italy. Italian LED technology is among the most advanced in the world for precision lighting applications. Therefore, Futala’s lighting infrastructure is at a genuinely international standard.

The Futala Restoration — Where the Project Stands

The Independence Day display is happening in the middle of an ongoing restoration project. Therefore, it is important to understand what the full Futala fountain project involves.

Futala Musical Fountain has been non-functional for a long time. Furthermore, the restoration project is a comprehensive technical overhaul — not just a simple repair job. It involves new water pumps, new lighting infrastructure, new sound systems and a complete upgrade of the fountain’s show capabilities.

The Italian RGBA LED lights are already installed. Moreover, the sound system is also in place — as evidenced by the Patriotic Medley that will play on August 15. However, the water pumps — the core mechanical element that makes the fountain actually spray water — are still being procured. They are expected to arrive after Independence Day.

As a result, the full fountain experience — with water, light and sound working together — is still some weeks away. However, the August 15 preview gives Nagpur residents their first confirmation that the project is progressing well.

Why the Gallery Remains Closed on Independence Day

Many Nagpur residents will wonder why they cannot come to Futala to watch the tricolour display in person. The answer is straightforward. Restoration work is actively underway at the site. Furthermore, having public visitors in an active construction and installation zone creates safety risks.

Therefore, the viewing gallery will remain closed on August 15. The Independence Day display is primarily a technical test — to verify that the lighting systems work correctly and that the programming produces the desired colours and sequences.

However, this does not mean residents cannot see anything. Futala Lake is a large open area. Moreover, the light display will be visible from the lake’s surroundings even without entering the gallery. Therefore, residents who visit the Futala area on Independence Day evening may still be able to see the tricolour glow from the perimeter.

What Nagpur Can Expect When the Fountain Fully Opens

The Futala Musical Fountain’s full restoration will transform one of Nagpur’s most beloved public spaces. Furthermore, the combination of Italian RGBA LED lights, water fountains and a programmed sound system will create a world-class light-and-water show.

Musical fountains — where water jets are choreographed to music with precisely timed lighting — have become major urban attractions in cities across India. Navi Mumbai’s Palm Beach Road fountain and several others draw thousands of visitors every evening. Moreover, Futala Lake already has the advantage of a beautiful lakeside setting that makes it a naturally attractive destination.

Therefore, when the full restoration is complete and the fountain opens to the public, it has the potential to become Nagpur’s most popular evening entertainment destination. Furthermore, the international quality of the lighting infrastructure confirms that this is not a basic renovation — it is a world-class upgrade.
