Metro Services Suspended in town until 31 March

Just as Maha Metro Metro Services was expected to be on hold for the whole day on March 22nd following Janta Curfew’s wake, we now see the officials calling for the full shutdown of the Metro services until March 31, 2020. All thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic that made huge media headlines and the complete shutdown declared by the Union Government of India along with the Maharashtra State Government to combat the virus, the Nagpur Metro train services were swift to shut down their services in the area.

The officials took the decision to suspend all of the city’s metro services, which was taken to hamper the spread of the virus in the area. There are more than five cases of COVID 19 in the town so far, and so it has put the services on hold until that time. The city has also experienced other businesses, such as malls, hotels, movie theatres, and stores, having already been shut down following orders from the government. This should help people remain indoors and have a low chance of getting this disease transmitted.

The commuters along with the Maha Metro staff were subjected to routine testing for the virus using Infrared Thermometer even during the metro’s service. The Metro offices also saw the Awareness campaign coming out, and stations even sought the support of social media. The Corona Virus knowledge was also seen on TV screens, boards, and was even aired via the public address system.

Rahate Colony, stations ready for Bansi Nagar Metro

Nagpur: By the end of this month, MahaMetro will open two more Metro stations. The railway stations in Rahate Colony and Bansi Nagar are ready and Metro Rail Safety Commissioner (CMRS) was invited to inspect them. It is expected that the inspection will take place between 27 and 29 March.

A Metro spokesperson said after CMRS provided the green signal, the stations would be opened immediately. “Rahate Colony is on the Sitabuldi stretch to Khapri (Reach I) while Bansi Nagar is on the Sitabuldi stretch to Lokmanya Nagar (Reach III). After these stations open, we expect our ridership to increase on both reaches. That had happened after we opened the Reach I station at Jaiprakash Nagar, “he added.

In October of November 2019, Rahate Colony station would have begun running. It’s 4 to 5 months behind budget. Once Reach I came into service in March 2019, MahaMetro had planned to open by December 2019 the remaining stretch stations Jaiprakash Nagar, Rahate Colony, Ajni Square, Ujjwal Nagar, Congress Nagar, and Chhatrapati Nagar—. Now, when all those stations will open, Metro can not tell.

Ajni Square station was almost ready and was likely to open under CMRS inspection in April, the spokeswoman said.

Commenting on the opening station issue, the spokesperson said the contractor ILFS had gone bankrupt and left the job halfway through. “We had to retenee the job and send it to other firms. There was a waste of two to three months in the process, “he said.

He also said the Ujjwal Nagar station faced land acquisition issues as the landowner had moved the court. “Opening is going to be the last,” he said.

He said that the deadline was March 2021, when the entire Nagpur Metro project was completed. “By that time, we will complete Sitabuldi to Prajapati Nagar (Reach IV) and Sitabuldi to Automotive Square (Reach II),’ he added.

Cash Crunch Will Hamper City Metro’s Work

As we have seen the NMC hit hard with their city’s poor financial performance. Different seems to be the story of Maha Metro as well as its finances have been hindered with a major hampering of the civic body. This has led both the NMC and the NIT to provide the Maha Metro’s necessary flow of funds to run the show for various work that appears to have been working in the region. The total cost of the Metro function has cost around 8600 Crores, while the NIT and NMC have around 1200 Crores in share.

Nonetheless, with the two bodies ‘ continuing poor financial health this financial year, the Maha Metro seems to be running in a bad way. The two entities currently owe around 868 Crores, as they have only shared the whopping sum of around 228 Crores so far, according to the reports. Now both bodies have raised their hands for failing to pay the said sum thus affecting Maha Metro’s work in the city reported the company’s sources.

This is not the case with the two bodies in the region, but by not paying their share of money for the scheme, even the state and the central government flunked in their responsibilities. In the current financial year, the Maha government has yet to pay about 518 Crores, though similar is also the case with the Government. The base, however, has been prompt in paying the sum sought help from foreign agencies so far receiving no less than 1067 Crores.

Hingna Metro Depot ready for May end

Nagpur: The Hingna car depot at MahaMetro, where coaches used in Reach III (Sitabuldi to Lokmanya Nagar stretch) are parked at night, is expected to be ready by May end. Currently, it is half complete, and the trains are available for parking.

A spokesperson for MahaMetro said the depot has an area of 65 acres of which 30.19 acres are used for the maintenance of rolling stocks. The depot consists of twelve components: time and safety office (TSO), auto coach washing plant (ACWP), traction substation (TSS), auxiliary substation (ASS), underground tank pump house, maintenance building, pit wheel lathe (PWL), engineering train unit (ETU), internal cleaning platform (ICP), unloading platform, stabilizing lines and biodigester.

The TSO is for the use of security purposes since the depot is limited to ordinary citizens. It’s all in. The ACWP is for the wash plant bed equipment, where the train is washed from outside. It is through too. The TSS moves MSEDCL’s supply of 33 KV down to 25 KV. It’s ready but the ASS is under construction, which goes down 33 KV to low tension (LT) level.
The UG tank pump room is used to supply water to various buildings inside the depot. Work is underway. Also being under construction is the maintenance building.

The PWL under construction will have a wheel-orientation machine where regular intervals are checked for the wheel profile. The ETU is complete and will be used to store the equipment for the rerailing of track machines.

The ICP will be used to disinfect rolling stock’s inside and underfloor. This building is currently being used for rolling stock maintenance as the maintenance building is under construction. The unloading platform on which the new train is discharged is complete with the help of the unloading equipment.

Research is continuing on the stable lines where rolling stock is stable. Research on the biodigester has not, however, begun.

Nagpur Metro Shops Find Takers

Nagpur: While Nagpur Metro ridership may not be spectacular, its stations are finding takers in the commercial space. This may help to boost ridership. A Metro official said 11 commercial spaces have either been leased or bids received for them so far.

The Institute of Engineers Metro station has launched a coaching program. Metro officials are delighted with the fact that many students use Metro to reach the class.

Naivedyam Group has also leased a shop at Lokmanya Nagar Metro station. A bid for a shop was received at Institution of Engineers, two for Rani Jhansi Square station, one for Subhash Nagar and one for Lokmanya Nagar each. Mother Dairy has purchased three shops at stations in Jai Prakash Nagar, Khapri and Airport. A further offer for a shop in Jai Prakash Nagar was issued.

The stores were rented for nine years. The rent is based on per square feet and depends on the station’s location.

The largest commercial realty project for Metro is the traffic and transport management center (TTMC) across from Yeshwant Stadium. It will have a tower on 25 floors, and two on 19 floors. There will be afoot overbridge linking the TTMC to Sitabuldi station.

Metro had floated bids to develop the project on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis but did not get a good response because of a real estate slump. It has now prepared to construct a new revenue model.

MahaMetro plans to earn revenue from non-ticket sources by more than 50%. Most of this would come from commercial space leasing and commercial and residential property sales. Such ventures are years away, though. Many of them are yet to be designed. The slump in the real estate sector has hindered the agency’s plans.

While private companies are getting a good response from the co-branding of Metro stations. The last day to send bids is February 25, and afterward, the exact number will be known. Under this system, a Metro station will have the name of the private agency paying MahaMetro royalty.
