Ajni Revamp Faces Roadblock as Squatters Stall, NMC Remains Inactive

In the bustling city of Nagpur, the ambitious redevelopment project of Ajni railway station (Nagpur) encounters a significant hurdle on its west side, where a row of shops impedes progress. This roadblock has emerged as a challenge for the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA), throwing a wrench into their plans for station enhancement.

Ajni Station’s Struggle for Transformation

Shops Stall Redevelopment

At the forefront of Ajni station’s west side stand six shops, creating a hindrance to the redevelopment initiative spearheaded by RLDA. The obstruction, located on plot number 65/A and owned by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), has become a focal point of contention.

NMC’s Leased Land Predicament

The NMC had leased this land, measuring 3,430 sqft, to Amarchand Jaichandji Jain on October 30, 1987, for a duration of 30 years. However, the lease expired on October 27, 2017, and a subsequent request by the Central Railway divisional railway (Nagpur) manager (DRM) on April 7, 2022, sought the plot for the Ajni station’s circulating area.

Despite the expiration of the lease, the land remains occupied, and no eviction notice has been served to the leaseholder, who, in turn, has sublet the shops. Pankaj Parashar, executive engineer of NMC’s estate department, informed TOI that despite demands from the Jains for a lease extension, NMC has not acceded. Plans are underway to propose the diversion of the land to Central Railway, accompanied by an impending notice to the Jains for lease agreement violations.

Ajni Station’s Unfolding Drama

Tussle Over Territory

As the redevelopment project seeks momentum, a tug-of-war ensues over the contested land. The clash between the RLDA’s vision and the current occupants’ resistance adds layers of complexity to the situation.

NMC’s Standoff

NMC remains firm on its decision not to renew the lease, citing the imperative need for the land in the station’s expansion plans. This firm stance, however, triggers a series of events leading to potential legal ramifications.

Ajni Station’s Future Hangs in the Balance

Delayed Progress

The standoff between the authorities and the occupants has resulted in a stagnation of the Ajni station’s revamp. The ripple effects of this delay extend beyond the immediate area, impacting commuters and stakeholders eagerly awaiting a transformed railway hub.

Commuters Left in Limbo

With the redevelopment timeline in jeopardy, commuters are left in uncertainty. The promised enhancements, meant to streamline their travel experience, now dangle in the balance.

On-Street Parking: NMC’s Ambitious Plan Hits Roadblocks

In 2022, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) set an ambitious goal to introduce on-street parking at 75 locations, aiming to alleviate the persistent issue of haphazard parking in the city. However, the reality is starkly different, with only 11 spots being operational in the past two years.

What Caused the Delay?

The primary cause for this delay lies in the NMC’s ( Nagpur Municipal Corporation) failure to collaborate effectively with the traffic police. Out of the initially proposed 75 locations, objections were raised by the traffic police for 64 sites, creating a significant roadblock. The consequence? Only a fraction of the intended on-street parking spots materialized.

Joint Inspection for a Fresh Start

Recognizing the need for a cohesive approach, both the NMC and the traffic police have now committed to conducting a joint inspection of each identified spot. Ravindra Bundhade, NMC executive engineer (traffic), emphasizes the importance of this collaboration to streamline the implementation of on-street parking.

Under-Street Parking: A Relief for Motorists

Amidst the challenges faced in executing on-street parking plans, the NMC introduces a temporary solution – under-street parking. Motorists can park their vehicles along the road without incurring any charges, providing a momentary respite from the complications associated with on-street parking.

First Phase Implementation

In the initial phase, the NMC traffic department proposed ten areas for on-street parking. However, this faced resistance from the traffic police, who objected to eight of the selected roads. This lack of coordination has been a recurring issue, leading to a less-than-smooth implementation process.

Concerns Raised by Traffic Police

Traffic police officers express concerns over allowing parking on busy roads, particularly those witnessing high commercial activities. According to their preliminary observations, such spots are not conducive to on-street parking as it could severely disrupt traffic flow. Striking a balance between addressing parking concerns and maintaining smooth traffic movement becomes crucial.

Unearthing the Traffic Woes

Despite Nagpur having wider roads compared to other metropolitan cities, traffic congestion persists due to rampant haphazard parking. Many commercial building parking lots are misused for alternative purposes, forcing visitors to resort to on-road parking.

Lack of Expert Consultation

Critics highlight the NMC’s failure to consult with traffic police and experts when selecting on-street parking spots. A comprehensive survey of all busy roads within the proposed on-street parking zones is deemed essential to identify and address potential issues like hawking zones and traffic congestion.

Escalating Penalties for Haphazard Parking

A closer look at traffic police actions against motorists parking indiscriminately on roads reveals a significant increase in penalties. From 22,658 cases in 2021, the number surged to 89,944 cases in 2023, marking a substantial 75% rise. This highlights the urgent need for a systematic approach to parking solutions in Nagpur.

As the city grapples with the complexities of on-street parking, collaborative efforts between the NMC and the traffic police emerge as a key strategy for a more efficient and sustainable solution. The journey towards organized and hassle-free parking in Nagpur necessitates a holistic approach, encompassing expert opinions, comprehensive surveys, and a shared vision for a traffic-friendly cityscape.

PMI Electro Mobility Options Resumes Electric Bus Deliveries After Recovery Notice

In a remarkable turn of events, PMI Electro Mobility Options, the Haryana-based electric bus manufacturer, has initiated the long-awaited delivery of electric buses to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). This comes after a recovery notice was issued, demanding fines for a seven-month delay. Suresh Bagle, the Deputy Commissioner and Transport Director, disclosed that the company responded to the notice by committing to deliver seven electric buses weekly, aiming to meet the target of 144 buses by March.

Recovery Notice Spurs Action

Bagle emphasized that failure to adhere to the March deadline would result in severe fines. NMC has already received 29 electric buses out of the initially agreed-upon 44, with the company falling short of its commitment by October last year. The contractual terms empower NMC to impose fines of Rs 12,000 per day for each delayed electric bus (Electric Bus Nagpur), constituting 0.1% of the Rs 12 crore bank guarantee, enforceable by NMC officials.

Contractual Obligations and Financial Allocations

The 2022 contract between NMC and PMI involved the delivery of 144 air-conditioned electric buses, supported by a Rs 72 crore allocation from the 15th Finance Commission. In addition to delivering and operating the buses, PMI is tasked with constructing a central charging station in Wathoda.

Lagging Behind Schedule

Despite the integration of 29 buses into NMC’s Aapli bus fleet, which spans 191 routes and consists of 450 buses, the company has yet to fulfill its commitments. According to the agreement, PMI was slated to deliver 14 buses in August, followed by 10 in September. Subsequent phases included 20 buses in October, 30 in November, and a final batch of 60 buses in December of the previous year.

Aapli Bus Service Impact

The delays prompted NMC to issue a notice in August last year, signaling discontent. Aapli Bus service, covering 191 routes with an average daily ridership of 1.44 lakh passengers, generates approximately Rs 25 lakh in daily income on weekdays.

In this electrifying saga, PMI Electro Mobility Options is back on track, racing against time to meet its commitments and regain the trust of Nagpur’s commuters. The resumption of deliveries marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards a greener and more sustainable public transportation system.

This multi-faceted approach covers a comprehensive range of water bodies to enhance the overall drainage system.

What is the significance of canal cleaning?

Cleaning these canals is crucial for preventing waterlogging and ensuring efficient drainage, reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The meticulous attention to various water channels demonstrates the NMC’s commitment to comprehensive city planning.

River Lengths and Importance

What are the lengths of Nagpur’s major rivers?

The Nag River, flowing through and near Nagpur city, spans approximately 16.58 km. Similarly, the Pili River extends for 17.42 km, and the Pohra River covers a distance of 15.17 km. Understanding the lengths of these rivers is essential for effective planning and execution of cleaning campaigns.

In conclusion, the NMC’s early initiation of the river cleaning campaign underscores a proactive approach to ensure the city’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon.
