Davos: Fareed Zakaria said that India needs an open economy, adopting China-US policy is dangerous

China retains free technology and allows free trade within a certain range. So, instead of open-mindedness, we moved forward in an unmanned fashion.

The current economic situation does not allow India to follow the Conservationist path. Unless India succeeds on the protectionist lines, India won’t be good at that. In other words, Farid Zakaria, a world-renowned journalist, and economist. In an exclusive conversation with news director Rahul Kanwal of the India Today Group in Davos 2020, Farid Zakaria said the World Economic Forum (WEF) was always known for open trade policies but now times have changed.

China maintains free technology and allows free trade within a certain range. And we went forward in an autonomous way rather than open-mindedly.

NHAI will fix some shortcomings on and under Sadar flyover | Nagpur updates

Nagpur updates:-Although the Rs218 crore Y-shaped Sadar flyover has reduced the time taken by motorists to move from Samvidhan Square to Katol Road Square and Mankapur Square, NHAI has failed to address several shortcomings in the bridge that was opened to the public on January 10.

The traffic chaos at the Kamptee-Wardha Road landing point, between Samvidhan Square and LIC Square, is now evident to everyone. TOI motorized the flyover in a car with Sandeep Agrawal, a resident of Raj Nagar (Sadar) who pointed out the many safety measures needed on and under the flyover that the NHAI had overlooked.

From all three directions, we took the flyover and also flew under the flyover. Agrawal said the travel time for the flyover has been cut. “Earlier, driving speed was 30 km per hour, but almost doubled with the flyover. Today, in 4–5 minutes, we can hit the other end of the flyover, “he said.

We started from Katol Chowk at 10.30am and even before we climbed the flyover we saw several vehicles heading down the wrong side. Before the Katol Road side flyover intersects with the other wing of the flyover near Anjuman College, it was a smooth ride for more than a kilometer.

This point of intersection requires a path divider, as many cars have been seen heading down the wrong lane. In addition, dividers should also be mounted in all three directions at the flyover entrance and exit points — Katol Chowk, Mankapur and near Kasturchand Park.
Lack of lane discipline, especially at the curves, can cause accidents over the flyover. Agarwal suggested that NHAI should build dividers at such places to bifurcate vehicle up and down movement.

Bicycle riders, usually forbidden to use any sadar flyovers, have also been found using it. We also saw a bus making a U-turn after their driver noticed that he had gone into the wrong lane. Agarwal also noted that the Sadar flyover landing near Kasturchand Park is a permanent black spot.

Then, we made a U-turn from Samvidhan Square and headed toward Katol Road under the flyover. When we continued the situation escalated. A bottleneck was in the shelter of an NIT city bus. At this point, removing encroachments and illegally parked vehicles will ease congestion considering the narrowed lane.

“Beneath the flyover, close to the NIT bus stop, traffic police and NMC need to take action against unauthorized passenger vehicles and some vendor intrusions,” he said.
Vehicle parking at either side of the road should be overcome by allocating space between the pillars of the flyover. “Due to lack of sunlight, the planting drive between the pillars will not succeed anyway,” he pointed out. Better use of those patches is to solve the problem of parking along the road, he said.

The width of the divider is more on either side from Chhaoni Durga Mandir towards Katol Chowk. “I believe the footpath width at this stretch can be decreased to increase road width, which can provide smooth vehicle movement,” he said.
We also noticed a private school parking their staff vehicles using the footpath alongside the flyover near Raj Nagar. There is also a need to cut a huge tree in the middle of Sadar road alongside the flyover since it has reduced the width of the road and can cause mishaps.

CCTVs should also be installed at flyover intersection points which can be used to penalize wrong side drivers and rash drivers.
Suggestions ON SADAR flyover 24-hour survey by all the agencies concerned, NHAI, RTO, traffic police, NGOs such as Jan Aakrosh etc. Dividers nearly all along the flyover, particularly at entry / exit points, curves, parts where traffic merges and intersects Reduce speed, prevent U-turns, wrong-sided driving Some speed breakers, big signage and blink amber light at intersection point (Acharaj Square) Pr Widen 100-200 meters of road adjacent to all flyover points to avoid bottlenecks on state and national highways taken by heavy traffic, including ST busses Slow traffic or vehicle breakdown in narrow stretches will result in congestion where traffic flows, such as defence zones, cinemas, NIT office, Raj Nagar etc.

A PLAN OF ACTION Regular traffic police manning to stop untoward incidents In-depth recce to identify issues. Next, introduce remedial measures below the flyover.

Suspend traffic on flyover for a few days, if necessary, to complete civil works Inaugurate it again with the participation of Sadar shopkeepers, MOIL officers, heads of schools and colleges, RTO officers, driving class members, military personnel, MSRTC officials, private bus owners and others who would use it, to increase their project pride, ensure compliance.

Video: NMC-OCW’s annual ESR’s & GSR’s cleaning drive in city

Nagpur: Contaminated by overhead water tanks (ESR’s)-has become a thing of the past with Nagpur Municipal Corporation & Orange City Water (OCW) launched an annual safe and scientific approach for cleaning and disinfecting overhead water tanks (ESR’s).  Since the last 7 years, NMC-OCW has started cleaning every ESR / GSR every year.

Results: the improvement of the city’s water quality was attributable to this mission.  The journey from 79 per cent of the water quality (March 1, 2012) to 96 per cent (October 2019) is strongly supported by the ESR cleaning drive of NMC-OCW. Improving the quality of water is a sign of improved social health, as most infectious illnesses are water-borne.

A major reason for contamination of water is removed when the ESR is scientifically and thoroughly disinfected by a house-based tank cleaning machine, says technical experts in the field.

Continuing the trend Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Orange City Water (OCW) started cleaning ESR in the city and intended to clean up nearly 64 existing ESRs located in all areas of the city.

Crop insurance: State moots loss and profit sharing model

Nagpur: The state government is pushing the so-called cap and cup model for the Prime Minister’s crop insurance scheme. Launched during the first term of the BJP Government, the system is heavily subsidized by the Center and the State, with farmers having to pay just 2% of the premium.

The state has now come up with a proposal that if an insurance company causes damages beyond a certain amount, the government must intervene and share the burden. Additionally, if earnings reach a specific level, they must be shared with the government by the insurance company.

The scheme has, however, drawn flak from farmers ‘ groups who say that it has only ended up with insurance companies netting huge premiums with a little payout to farmers as compensation. This is due to the terms and conditions of the program, the groups pointed out.

As the Standing Committee on Agriculture visited Nagpur while part of its tour to research the insurance scheme in the state, the government official also made a proposal for a cap and cup model, according to the sources. The committee headed by Parvatagouda Gaddigoudar, a BJP MP from Bagalkot in Karnataka, held a meeting on Thursday at a luxury hotel, which also led to serious criticism.

Under the cap and cup model, the share of losses and gains can be kept at 20% or so on both sides, the source said. The design is at the drawing board stage. More information, such as whether the sharing will be done by the state government or both the state and the middle, need to be worked out, the source said.

The State Department of Agriculture has argued that crop insurance should be issued on a voluntary basis. At present, it is compulsory for those who use crop loans. A group of farmers feels that it is their money that is being used to pay compensation for those in crisis-ridden areas such as Marathwada who are vulnerable to losses.

When members of the Parliamentary Committee met with farmers ‘ representatives, there was a common complaint about the method for calculating damages by insurance companies. Farmers ‘ groups also called for an end to the system of assigning areas to insurance companies and allowing all companies to compete freely in a given market.

At present, specific areas are assigned to companies on the basis of bidding. Farmers, however, want the freedom to choose between all insurance companies, said sources.

“Crop insurance is the only scheme where there is no freedom to choose a service provider because a given area is allocated to a specific company. The point is valid and will be taken up, “said the source of the proceedings of the meeting.

Calls have also been made to reduce the geographical area for the estimation of losses. In Maharashtra, a block of villages is considered to be a single unit. Thus, if only a village is affected by natural disasters, farmers can not be compensated if the entire block is not affected. It stops many from benefiting from the insurance scheme. In Rajasthan, the device was set at the panchayat level, covering 2-3 villages, and sometimes only one, the source said.

Navneet Rana, MP from Amravati and also a member of the committee, said, “Insurance companies are earning almost Rs21 crore a day, but farmers are hardly getting anything in the way of compensation. The basic unit for calculating losses must be brought down to the village or panchayat level.

Lawyers, professors are joining the anti-CAA movement

Nagpur: ongoing protests against the Law on Citizenship (Amendment) 2019 (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) in Eidgah, Jaffar Nagar, have received support from lawyers, teachers, doctors and academics on Thursday.

The speakers referred to CAA, NPR and NRC as’ anti-poor and’ anti-national’ laws and appealed to non-Muslim religious minorities and those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Schedules Tribes (ST) and lower Hindu castes to come forward and support the agitation.

“The CAA, NRC and NPR combo are moving India towards the Hindu Rashtra definition developed by Savarkar and Golwalkar. This concept does not have a place for non-Vedic religions. After the Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs and all minorities in the country will be attacked, “said Professor Prajwalla Tatte. She also called on women of all faiths to join the marchers, saying that new laws would exclude women in the future.

Homeopathic practitioner Dr Shahwar Naziya believed that giving citizenship to people from Pakistan and Afghanistan could carry polio back to India. “India was declared free of polio by the WHO four years ago, but Pakistan is still dealing with it. Persons from Pakistan will carry polio back to India, as no one will test their health and immunization status when offering them citizenship, “she said.

“We will resist CAA for the future of our children,” Naziya said. She got a repulsive response from the women present at the demonstrations.

Dr Ratinath Mishra declared CAA and NPR anti-India. “This is against the guiding principles of our constitution. The present government is following the policy of’ divide and rule’ of the British, and we will never let them succeed, “he said.

A group of district and high court lawyers visited Eidgah Ground and expressed their support for the agitation. High court lawyer Ravi Shakar Bhure said that this is a massive conspiracy in which the judiciary is powerless.

“Citizens are protesting across the world. India’s reputation as a democratic country has been hit hard. Even the courts refuse petitions against CAA and NRC, which is disappointing for a law student like me, “he lamented. Lawyers Sheetal Deshpande, Shabana Khan, Akshay Samarth, Akeb-ul-Haq spoke on the occasion and vowed to provide all necessary legal assistance to the protesters.

Ensure that children living in rural areas are not deprived of education

Nagpur: Charity could be all other means of service, but educating a person is an act of empowering them. Education is of the utmost importance to every human being and it is our duty to ensure that no children, even in rural areas, are deprived of schooling, said Ravidev Gupta, President of the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation, on Thursday.

Gupta delivered a presidential address at the inauguration of Vigyan Mahotsav ‘ Vision 2020,’ a three-day science exhibition for school and college students organized as part of Khasdar Sanskrutik Mahotsav.

The exhibition was organized jointly by Khasdar Sanskrutik Mahotsav Samiti, My Science Lab (MSL), Stree Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Natraj Niketan Sanstha and Nagpur Education Department at Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Nandanvan.

Gupta said, “Science is an integrated technology field and its progress is vertical. The base is laid right from the level of education achieved in elementary school. “We should aspire to achieve a level of excellence by acquiring knowledge and contributing to the use of the tools at our disposal to discover and invent creative projects.” Fadnavis said, “Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has taken this initiative with the intention of generating scientific curiosity among students and promoting their performance. Witnessing the influence of students ‘ creativity through models shows that they are creating their own ideas. “On that day, Rathod encouraged students to take part in the exhibition in large numbers. He said the exhibition is a great medium for access to the scientific aptitude of students. Balpande noted that the theme of this show is the dream of the former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam.

The exhibition provided a platform for nearly 120 projects made by my students and welcomed the participation of hundreds of schools in and around the city.
