Nagpur positions national crime data as a ‘ safe ‘ city

In the silver lining for the city’s guardians, the 2018 national crime data just released shows that Nagpur can no longer be synonymous with the’ crime capital name, which was once used by the opponents of the then Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to corner him on the assembly floor. During a media briefing earlier this week, City Police Chief BK Upadhyay reported that there was a 10% decrease in the crime rate in 2019 compared to the previous year. The assertion was validated with the release of the 2018 crime statistics by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), where Nagpur’s position is much lower than that of most categories of serious crimes in the nation. In most of the categories, Nagpur is third in the state after Mumbai and Pune, excluding the category of’ Crime rate,’ registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Special Local Laws (SLL), where it has surpassed 19 such places nationwide by more than two metres. While Nagpur has a crime rate of 688.6 per lakh, Mumbai is 309.9/lakh, while Pune is the lowest (277.9/lakh) in Maharashtra. Nagpur is ranked 12th in the same category as the crime rate in India. Upadhyay said that the crimes were under control and that the numbers had both been visibly and statistically reduced.

“This is a safe city. The power is always trying to stay on its feet and to further develop the scenario, “he said. The city is number 12 in the country for rape, with 69 crimes registered in 2018, and the third in the state after Mumbai (319) and Pune (103)—making it statistically safer for women. Under Section 354 of the IPC, the city holds the 10th place in the nation with 274 offenses in the category of’ Assault on Women with the intention of insulting her modesty.’ It is third in the state after Mumbai (2,038), second in the nation, followed by Pune (406). In the category of’ Total offenses affecting the human body,’ Nagpur ranks 14th in the nation with 2,619 offences, and third in the state with Mumbai (11,585) number two in the country and Pune (2,903) ranking 12th. In the category of murder, the city is the 12th in the nation and the third in the state with 72 such crimes, one less than that in Pune. Mumbai is the fourth in the nation and the first in the state to commit 164 murders. In the category Attempt to Murder,’ the city ranks third in the state and 11th in the nation with 77 crimes, after Pune (127) and Mumbai (280). In economic offenses, Mumbai is the nation’s first with 4803 crimes, while Nagpur is the 15th with 534 crimes. Pune is the 12th in the country with 777 crimes. The city is also relatively safer for senior citizens, with 207 offenses— the sixth in the nation and the second in the state after Mumbai (1,043) at the top of the chart. Pune, with 169 crimes, is safest in the state for the elderly population as per national crime data. Nagpur is third in the state for crimes against children and sixth in the country for 538 crimes. Mumbai has the highest crime against children in the state and the second in the nation, with 2,538 crimes.

BJP rout in Nagpur Zilla Parishad a ‘ shock ‘ poll: Shiv Sena

Polling for six ZPs in Maharashtra-Nagpur, Akola, Washim, Dhule, Nandurbar and Palghar (332 seats)-and Panchayat Samitis (664 seats) in their jurisdiction took place on Tuesday and the results were declared on Wednesday.

On Friday, the Shiv Sena called the election result in Nagpur Zilla Parishad (ZP), where the BJP was ousted from power by the Congress as “sensational and surprising.” Polling for six ZPs in Maharashtra-Nagpur, Akola, Washim, Dhule, Nandurbar and Palghar (332 seats)-and Panchayat Samitis (664 seats) in their jurisdiction took place on Tuesday and the results were announced on Wednesday. The BJP lost control of the ZP in Nagpur, the home district of Devendra Fadnavis and Nitin Gadkari. The BJP won only 15 of the 58 seats in the Nagpur ZP, where the Congress had a handsome 30 seats, while its ally, the NCP, had 10 seats. The editorial in’ Saamana,’ the mouthpiece of the ruling Shiv Sena, pointed out that except for Dhule, the BJP had suffered defeat in the remaining five district councils.

In these five districts, the Congress, the NCP, the Shiv Sena and Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) have done “very well,” the Marathi daily said. The editorial stated that the defeat of the BJP in the hometown of Fadnavis, the former Chief Minister, and Gadkari, the Union Minister, was “sensational and shocking” and the result shows that the rural population was “fed up” with the party.” Congress was doing well in the Assembly elections in Nagpur (held in October) and now the District Council of the BJP is wrestling,” Sena said. The paper said in Nandurbar and elsewhere that if the Congress had fought the elections in alliance with the Shiv Sena, the BJP would have been “finished.” The Senate is in power in Maharashtra in coalition with the Congress and the NCP. In the 56-member Nandurbar ZP, both the Congress and the BJP won 23 seats each, while the Sena, which had no previous presence in the Council, had seven seats.” No party can get power in the district council without the support of the Shiv Sena. The anger of losing power in Nandurbar was so much that BJP goons attacked Sena party office in Akkalkua,” the paper noted. However, despite losing in Nagpur, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in these ZP polls, winning 109 of the 332 seats on offer.

Congress wins 10, NCP 4, BJP 7 in 21 Nagpur ZP Circles

The early trends in the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in the Nagpur district showed that Congress and the NCP were moving forward. In the 21 Circles of the 58 Circles of Zilla Parishad, Congress won 10 Circles, NCP 4, BJP 7. Shiv Sena and the independents had drawn nil.

Polling for the 59 seats of the Zilla Parishads (ZP) and 116 seats of the 13 Panchayat Samitis (PS) in the Nagpur district took place on Tuesday, with the former BJP and Shiv Sena coalition vying separately for this war of control. With around 67% of the vote, 14,19,708 voters sealed the fate of 270 ZP and 497 PS candidates in this election. The counting of votes and the announcement of results is in progress on Wednesday, 8 January. In Kamptee ZP Circle, Congress and BJP have packed two circles each.

NIT cancels the rent of Nagarik Sahakari Rugnalaya, orders the demolition of the house

Taking a firm stand on the broken Nagarik Sahkari Rugnalaya, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) canceled its lease of land on North Ambazaria. In addition, NIT also ordered the administrator to demolish the hospital building in a dilapidated state. It can be said that the hospital has been shut down since 2013.On 24 December, the chairperson of the NIT held a hearing and, eventually, on 7 January, an order was issued to revoke the lease of Nagarik Rugnalaya. The developer was asked to remove the system within the next 30 days.

Otherwise, the NIT will demolish the buildings and the expenses will be recovered from the Rugnalaya government. NIT allocated 5.482 m2 of land on the North Ambazari road to build a hospital in the 1970s on a 30-year lease. The lease included a provision that if the Rugnalaya were unable to operate the hospital, the land would be returned to the NIT. Due to several factors, the hospital was unable to operate and it was decided to hand it over to a private party. In 2007, the Rugnalaya management signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the M / S Quality Care Health Group, but it did so. 2010: In 2010,Expression of interest was invited and the Dr. Arneja Cardiology Institute was chosen to establish a modern hospital.

Dr Bhalchandra Subhedar, the city’s senior physician, had filed a PIL before the Bombay High Court of Nagpur, challenging the Development Agreement between Nagpur Nagrik Rugnalaya and Dr Arneja. The High Court quashed and set aside the deal, and subsequently the Supreme Court also dismissed the SLP filed by Dr Arneja. Since then, the hospital building has been in ruins. Dr. Bhalchandra Subhedar filed another PIL through Adv Akshay Sudame seeking the establishment of a committee to investigate and submit procedures for the re-establishment of the hospital and direction against NIT to initiate proceedings for the cancelation of the allocation of land to the Rugnalaya. On 17 December 2019, a division bench consisting of Justice Sunil Shukre and Justice Rohit Deo ordered NIT to complete a two-month investigation into the cancelation of the allocation to Rugnalaya.Pursuant to a notice given by the High Court, NIT informed the Rugnalaya of the reasons why the allocation should not be cancelled.

BJP is losing RSS Nagpur Bastion, four more Zilla Parishads in Maharashtra.

The Congress–Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) combined dealt the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a humiliating defeat in the elections to the prestigious Nagpur Zilla Parishad–home to opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) –officials said here on Wednesday.Apart from Nagpur, the BJP was defeated in Palghar, Nandurbar and Washim, and the Congress in Dhule, while the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) had the surprise charge of Akola Zilla Parishad (ZP).

Out of a total of 332 seats in six ZPs, the BJP had 103 seats, Congress 73, NCP 46, Shiv Sena 49, VBA 42, while the Independents and others had 14 seats. In the 58-seat Nagpur ZP for which the polls were conducted, the Congress held 30 seats, the NCP 10 seats, while the BJP had only 15 seats. The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally Shiv Sena chose to compete alone in Nagpur ZP and had to be content with just one seat, while the Independents and others won two seats in this prestigious local body. In the Palghar ZP of 57 seats, the Sena had 18 seats, the NCP 14 and the BJP 12, while the CPI(M) had five seats, and the Independents had three. Congress had only one seat. Nevertheless, the BJP had reason to smile in Dhule, where 39 of the 56 seats were held, followed by the Congress of Seven, Sena Four and NCP Three, plus three Independents. There was a neck-to-neck fight in Nandurbar for the 56 seats in which BJP and Congress had 23 seats, Sena seven and NCP three. The BJP experienced a jolt in Washim ZP where, out of a total of 52 seats, the party had only seven seats, the NCP had 12 seats, Congress nine seats, Sena six seats, VBA 15 seats, while the Independents had three seats.

The VBA–which failed to open its account in the 2019 elections to Lok Sabha and the Assembly–held the 53-seat Akola ZP with 22 seats, followed by Sena with 13 seats, NCP with 4 seats, Congress with 3 and Independents with 4 seats. The elections for the 58 Zilla Parishad and 116 Panchayat Samitis seats were held on 7 January and the results were announced on Wednesday. Even in the six Panchayat Samiti (PS) polls, there was a shock in store for the BJP, with only 194 of the 664 seats in which the elections were held. The Congress had 145 seats, Shiv Sena 117, NCP 80, VBA 78, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena two, CPI(M) 12, CPI one, Independents and others 34.Congresswoman Mahendra Dongre won a seat in Dhapewada, the native village of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.Congressman Nana Kambale dealt another blow by bagging Koradi’s seat— the hometown of former B.The Nagpur ZP and several other local authorities were under the jurisdiction of the BJP-Sena when they were allies until the Sena joined the MVA with the Congress-NCP in November 2019. The losses of the BJP came despite the high-profile campaign launched by the top-ranking state leaders for all these civic bodies.

Four day tests a red ball cricket boon or curse?

Virat Kohli, Tim Paine, Joe Root, and Faf du Plessis all had their say on Test cricket being reduced to four days.

Transition is the only constant, but some things are best left untouched. As the four-day test talk dominates the cricket world, this is something that the International Cricket Council should stop when it comes to reducing the day from the longest, purest, most tested, grinding— the list of adjectives only goes on when you describe Test Cricket. Red-ball cricket has had a fair share of evolution… don’t make a mistake. From three, four, five, six, and a timeless game (the pre-Second World War “Timeless Tests”), it traveled a bit, and five days was a sweet spot, and it has remained so since the mid-1970s. Experiments on four-day and six-day games were carried out as recently as 2019 and 2005 respectively, but they did not have a major. Nevertheless, the International Cricket Council[ICC], the governing body of cricket, insists on May the test cricket day after the calendar year 2023 and is expected to discuss the plan in March? But, why is that? Okay, man! For example, sales. If the Test Cricket Day is that, it saves a day of the extra cost that comes up for the game.

FOUR-DAY TESTS REPERCUSSIONS:-If a day is taken away from the game, are we ever going to have a repeat of the 2001 Harbhajan Eden heroics? Failed but courageous heist like Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz, Birmingham? In fact, if four-day tests come to play, half of Ben Stoke’s career in 2019 will never be remembered again. That’s precisely what the five-day plan brings to the table. The study, grind, wonder, and sheer application— for a reason, it’s a’ study.’

Four-day games will mean hurry and more reckless shots and could the whole grinding point and the price of a wicket. The presence of a batsman when he ground 200 deliveries and hit his hundred or the bowler when he got his wicket after successfully setting up a batsman will be reduced. Now, the team fighting first looks to bid their time and play for two days and put the opposition under pressure, and when the latter comes out of it — it shows the real character of the team, the player. This won’t be possible in four days. Teams will look to pile up runs faster, bowlers will have more pressure to get wickets and forget about the joy of a tripe ton until you’re reborn Virender Sehwag. In addition, a four-day test would also mean more workload for teams with four bowlers. On a day when 98 overs are to be bowled instead of 90, the workload of bowlers is going to increase, and on a summer day in places like Chennai, Perth … it’s nothing short of a nightmare.

OPINIONS DIVIDED:=As the debate rages on reducing the day, India and South Africa captains Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis said that Test cricket should last for five days, while Australia and England skippers Tim Paine and Joe Root believe that there is some sense in four-day cricket.” Four-day tests? Look, I’m not a fan of[it].” I don’t think the intention is going to be the right one, because then you’re going to talk about three-day tests, where do you end up? Then you’re worried about Test Cricket vanishing. I don’t agree with that at all.” I don’t think that’s fair to the purest format of the game-how cricket began initially and five-day test matches were the highest test you can have at the international level. In my opinion, it shouldn’t be changed,” Kohli said when asked about the four-day test. Tim Paine, Joe Root, and Faf du Plessis have agreed with their Indian counterparts.

WAY FORWARD:-Innovation plays a key role in drawing audiences to the stadiums and attracting new viewers. Take the’ Pink-Ball Test’ for instance. Kolkata welcomed it with open arms, and the stands were packed for the first four days, according to Sorav Ganguly— the president of the BCCI. Then comes the’ Boxing Day Test’—an annual event in Australia, which put together more than 1,5 lakh supporters in the first two days between Australia and England. Even the 2019 affair between the Aussies and New Zealand was a jam-packed affair. Yeah, good cricket and great build-up will get people into the stadiums, and that’s been proven time and time again.

Everything needs to be done to get this first is to provide nice, successful pitches. Nowadays, a lot of games end early because they’re played on flat decks. The first team fights out their opposition and the second team fights, cracks open and with time some pitches deteriorate into dust bowls… a textbook on the South African tour of India last year. It is therefore necessary to take a more direct and simple approach— to make sporting pitches. A top that should have grass in the first two days, allowing pacers to get something out of it, loosen up with time and be good at batting, and then, towards the end, bring the spinners into the game.Whenever this was done, the performances and the great matches followed, thereby filling the stadiums. Purists of the game and its fans will always flock to the stadiums for good cricket, and that’s only possible if it’s more competitive.
