Almost a day after Iran’s missile attack on Iraqi bases hosting US forces, satellite images showed the damaged area in the region attacked by Iran in response to the US airstrike killing its top general, Qasem Soleimani. Satellite images were taken by one of the SkySat satellites owned by the San Francisco-based Planet service. The images show the damage and wreckage of the al-Asad airbase in Iraq after the Iranian rocket attack. The images were taken on January 8, 2020, by Planet Labs Inc.
During Iran’s missile attacks, no American soldier died: Trump
President Trump, who spoke to the White House nation on Wednesday, said that no Americans or Iraqis were killed in the attack. There was an examination of the damage. However, post-missile strikes, Iran’s state media reported that about 80 US soldiers were killed and more than 200 wounded in the attack. “We have not suffered any losses. All our troops are secure and only minor damage has been done to our military bases,” Trump said. Speaking of counter-action against Iran, Donald Trump spoke about implementing immediately strong sanctions on Tehran, but ruled out launching a counter-military operation, adding, “The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who pursue it.”
Trump also said, “I am President, Iran will not be allowed to have nuclear weapons.” Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles in a pre-dawn assault on Wednesday targeting at least two bases where US military and coalition forces are deployed in Iraq, which Tehran said was a “slap in the face” of America. The US president called on Iran to “work together” to destroy the Islamic State, saying the assassination of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was “perfect” for Iran.” To the people and leaders of Iran, we want you to have a future and a great future, one that you deserve,” said Trump. Trump said that Iran appears to be standing, which is a good thing for all parties concerned, and a very good thing for the world.
Nagpur: The project called’ Roti Bank’ was launched in Nagpur after Mumbai, aimed at feeding the poor and hungry. The Roti Bank was opened at Rashtrasant Tukdoji Regional Cancer Hospital in the presence of the Director of the Foundation and Maharashtra’s former Director General of Police D Sivanandan, Police Commissioner Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, and IG KM Prasanna on Tuesday 7 January. Feed packets were served to poor patients on the occasion.
Other prominent figures on the occasion include Dr Subrojit Dasgupta, Dr B K Sharma, Chandrakant Deshmukh and other physicians and the Roti Bank team. The Roti Bank collects leftovers from restaurants, clubs and parties, stores them in vans and distributes them to the poor before food stalls.
In a world where millions of people are hungry every day, a former IPS officer has come up with an initiative to feed the poor. Launched in December last year by former top cop D Sivanandan, in collaboration with the famous Mumbai tiffin carrier ‘ Dabbawalas,’ Roti Bank claims to have received a good response. To bring a sense of benevolence to the rich class, Sivanandan encourages children from affluent families to “come and witness the joy of sharing (food),” he said, adding that alleviating the hunger of street children would help them to refrain from committing crimes.
Speaking at the time, Sivanandan said, “I never thought that such a good initiative would have a good start. The Roti Bank was founded in December 2017 from a pandal near the Lower Parel Railway Station in Mumbai. At that time, only 10 people were involved in the initiative. “There wasn’t any money. A friend of mine had provided a vehicle. Roti Bank now has 10 vehicles in Mumbai and the 11th in Nagpur. I was Police Commissioner 4r in Nagpur in 2004. Since Nagpur is the centre of tasty food, the city has been chosen for the initiative. India is a three-trillion dollar economy. The population of the country will surpass the population of China in the next year. Although India is a powerful country, about 20 crore people are hungry. We have enough food, but because of mismanagement, huge food goes to waste. Nearly 1.8 lakh tons of food is wasted every day in India, and around 20 crore people, many of whom are in Mumbai, are going hungry, “he lamented.
Sivanandan also said that the Roti Bank has served 10 Lakh people to date. “We distribute food to schools where poor students study. Over 500 patients at the Tata Cancer Hospital are served with food. The NGO has started cooking since 1 January. Salaries of staff and drivers shall be paid through this NGO. Prasanna Chaudhari will work with a ream of 20 volunteers in Nagpur, “said the former top cop.
As part of the program, two GPRS-equipped vans are making rounds of streets near hospitals and slums to provide food for the poor, he said. The NGO mainly collects leftover food staples such as rotis (chapati or wheat-made flatbread), rice, vegetables and dal to be distributed within 60 to 90 minutes.

NAGPUR: The election for Nagpur Zilla Parishad and panchayat samitis witnessed around 67% polling on Tuesday. The counting will be held on Wednesday and the picture will be clear by the afternoon though final results are officially declared in the evening. There were no untoward incidents in the district. Police had taken preventive action against 135 anti-social elements before polling. There were very few complaints regarding the malfunctioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs). However, many people complained about errors in voters’ lists. Complaints were received by the administration that names of some people in polling booths of Mansar-Shitalwadi circle were missing. Similar complaints were received from Nagardhan circle. The maximum enthusiasm among voters was seen in Mouda and Kuhi talukas, which witnessed over 60% polling by 3.30 pm. The figure for Mouda taluka was 62.42% while that of Kuhi was 62.51%. Against this Nagpur Rural taluka, which has a lot of semi-urban areas witnessed only 41.78% voting. Anjana Wakde (95) voted at the polling booth at Kolbaswami junior college, Dhapewada. She told the media that she had voted in every election since she was 21 (the previous minimum age for voting). Mira Bagde, a 70-year-old physically challenged woman, voted at Pipla village in the afternoon. She came with her family members in a car. Each voter had to cast two votes – one for ZP member and one for PS member. Such type of multiple voting is now common in local body elections. Counting will be held at 13 tehsil offices. Some 2,000 government staffers have been deployed for counting duty. There will be 16 EVMs on each counting table. As the same EVM contained a list of ZP and PS candidates, the counting process is simpler this time and is expected to be faster. The first result is expected by 12 noon. By around noon results of 13 ZP circles and 26, PS will be declared. As one round will take two hours the final tally will be known between 6 pm and 8 pm. Akola ZP witnessed around 56% voting. Most seats are witnessing a quadrangular fight between Congress-NCP, Shiv Sena, BJP and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). The VBA’s earlier avatar BRP-BMS has been in power in Akola ZP since years. This time another government may come to power. Washim ZP witnessed around 65% voting. There is no alliance between Congress and NCP in this district. The fight here too is quadrangular between Congress, NCP, BJP and Sena.

NAGPUR: Highways and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has promised to meet the demands of the North Indians in the city to extend the Amravati-Jabalpur express to Allahabad.
Earlier, Gadkari had promised to extend train number 12159/12160 Amravati-Jabalpur to Rewa, in response to a poll campaign in Prabagh 12-D for BJP candidate Vikram Gwalbanshi.
However, Rail Yatri Sangh (RYS) secretary Brijbhushan Shukla said, “Extension of the train until Rewa will not serve the purpose, as there is already a direct train from Nagpur to Rewa on Wednesdays. It would be better if the train were extended to Allahabad. “The distance between Nagpur and Allahabad is 913 km. Nagpur-Jabalpur distance is 575 km and if it is extended to Allahabad, the train will have to cover an additional 239 km.
In a memorandum to Gadkari, RYS requested that many of the patients from Madhya Pradesh and Allahabad travel to Nagpur for treatment. “If extended, many people travelling from the region to Allahabad will benefit,” Shukla said.
Although there are trains to Allahabad passing through Nagpur, they have a lower quota for the city. At least 8-10 private buses run daily from the city to Allahabad. These operators are exploiting passengers by charging them exorbitantly. Gadkari has promised to do what is needed, Shukla said.
Meanwhile, with the general budget likely to be presented on 1 February, Basant Shukla of Bharatiya Yatri Kendra (BYK) reiterated its call for either the start of a new train to Ratlam or the extension of the Nagpur-Indore train to Udaipur-Ratlam.
“This will benefit a large population of Rajasthans living in Nagpur, who often travel to their native places,” Shukla said.
