The daughter of Alibaug tailor, IAS aspiring teenagers at Government Polytechnic
NAGPUR: Rohinee Wankhede, who comes from a village in Alibaug, faced many financial and family obstacles during the 22nd Government Polytechnic ceremony in Sadar on Thursday to emerge as a travel and tourism diplomat.
Including her, the toppers included 19-year-olds from civil engineering, Pratik Wankhede and Viditee Jaltare as well as electrical division Nikhil Ambulkuar. They all aspire to become IAS officers.
Rohinee is now focusing on part-time work to finance her higher studies. Her father moved to Akola to look after her mum while her mother and two siblings are staying in Alibaug. “My mother was working part-time to cover the expenses for my Nagpur studies,” she said.
Such students were among the twenty-one toppers from twelve divisions, while at the university, 711 diplomas were awarded in all. Beside 28 funded honors, they won gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Rohinee was doing her HSC in commerce and wanted to make a financial sector career. “But I decided to take the new diploma course to begin early work in support of the financial needs of my family,” she said. Her elder sister pursues fashion design while her younger brother is a student in engineering at Penn.
Her father had moved to Akola in 2010, and worked there. She began working as front office executive at a resort in Tadoba after her final exams. Now, she has moved to Nagpur and worked under a chartered accountant. Pratik, Viditee and Nikhil have enrolled for degrees in BTech and BE though their ultimate goal is to clear up civil service.
“I want to provide accommodation for all of India’s poor people, and free education. Our literacy rates are too low,” said Pratik, who was top in all disciplines. His classmate and second overall topper Viditee said she wishes to serve the nation and disseminate knowledge as an IAS official.
Topper among all girls, her limited access to technology as a kid was the reason Monica Dholwani opted for computer science engineering. “We lived in a family together and had one computer. I’ve always wanted to know more about it, and developed gadget liking,” she said. Monica now wants to go for innovation and propagate technology utilization in the country’s rural areas. “I want to take the villages with technology-enabled services,” she said.
Smart City cameras helped cops solve 1.8k cases: Sonawane
Nagpur: Ramnath Sonawane, the outgoing Chief Executive Officer of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL), said Wednesday that the Smart City office here has helped the state police solve 1,800 cases of crime since its inception.
“The CCTV cameras installed under the Safe and Smart City project have also helped crack important cases, including 90 murders, eve-teasing, robbery thefts, etc,” said Sonawane, who will act as Secretary of the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority on 14 February.
On Wednesday, Sonawane presented his resignation as CEO of NSSCDCL to its Chairman and Chief Secretary of State, Pravin Pardeshi.
Sonawane was transferred to Nagpur Municipal Corporation as an additional municipal commissioner in April 2016. In 2017, he received an additional charge from the CEO of NSSCDCL. “On June 30, 2017, the city was chosen as one of the 100 smart cities. Since then, the city has been the first or second to work in Smart City, “said the outgoing CEO.
He admitted, however, that the work of the Smart City is going on at a slow pace. He blamed this on two factors— frequent rainfall and legal issues related to land procurement for land-based development.
“The deadline for the smart city mission is June 2021, but the NSSCDCL will not be able to meet the target,” said Sonawane.
So far, the NSSCDCL has received Rs 439 crore (Rs 196 crore from the central government, Rs 143 crore from the state government and Rs 100 crore from the Nagpur Improvement Trust) to carry out 21 different projects, but only two works have been completed to date.
The NSSCDCL is to construct 52 km in Pardi-Punapur, of which 16 roads are under construction. In addition, four elevated storage reservoirs and nine of the 28 bridges are under construction.
Of this, the NSSCDCL has spent 100 per cent of the Center’s share and 20 per cent of the State’s share on works such as a safe and smart city project (Rs 103 crore), road works worth Rs 65 crore and Rs12 crore for housing schemes, he said.
Sonawane added that he had a good relationship with leaders of all political parties, including City MP Nitin Gadkari, former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, etc.
Contractor accuses SC/ST hostel prisoners of wasting enough food for 50
According to his submission before the inquiry panel, M/s Tiger Saoji Caterers owner submitted photographs and videos of students carrying large amounts of boiled eggs, fruits and food from the hostel’s serving area into their quarters. “Approximately 50 kg of food per day is wasted according to our estimation which is adequate to feed 50 people.
In addition to accusing the contractor of bullying them, the department has set up an investigation with three assistant social welfare commissioners after students complained about poor quality and contaminated food. The students had been sitting on hunger strikes at the Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan on South Ambazari Road during the last week of January demanding the expulsion of the contractor.
It emerged during the inquiry that the students had taken Rs85,000 from the contractor forfeiting non-veg meals for 21 days and, apparently, went to hill stations on a jaunt. On February 9 TOI had written on the contractor’s allegations.
The contractor said on Tuesday that he had no problem in how much food and fruit students take away as long as they eat all of it. “But most of it is normally not eaten and thrown away, or left in the rooms to rot. According to law, the inmates are unable to take food and fruits to their quarters, but in the dining area they have to eat them, “he said.
The contractor also alleged that in the rooms some students were boozing, particularly on Wednesdays and Sundays when non-veg food is served.
The graduates, speaking with TOI, denied the claims and again blamed the contractor for trying to suppress their objections. “The images on the liquor are four years old. A senior prisoner has been suspended, and he’s on department record, “said a law student.
Another student agreed that some of them take the food to their rooms but in a limited quantity and during meal hours for those who are not present. “Many of us study in outside libraries. Timings for serving food are set. To our friends who arrive late, we try to hold back some thalis. If we don’t have to go hungry they will have to, “the student said.
They agreed that there is some food leftover but it is not as big as believed.
The contractor alleged the students were tossing the boiled eggs off the window of their room on the open plot adjacent to the hostel. “Some people gathered food items as they are consumable,” he said. Sources said the inquiry panel is likely to verify the claim by talking to those people who had brought food to the left.

Maharashtra buildings to get CCTVs in a phased way: Anil Deshmukh
Here he was talking to reporters.
“We’re starting with cities like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur that already have CCTV cameras. Subsequently, other cities will be phase-wise,” Deshmukh said.
Asked about the phone-tapping issue, Deshmukh said the information had been received that phones not only from Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena leaders, but also from BJP leaders like Eknath Khadse, had been tapped during the Devendra Fadnavis dispensation.
By the way, Khadse reportedly said that he did not think that his phone had been tapped during the previous BJP-Shiv Sena regime.
BJP and Fadnavis routinely denied the phone tapping claims.
5,450 wild animals using underpasses on a protected highway
NAGPUR: While the longest national highway in the country, NH-7, travelling along Maharashtra’s Pench Tiger Reserve often features news of wild animal deaths, the animals have now found new paths to avoid vehicles.
More than 5,450 wild animals, including 11 tigers, were captured on camera using six highway underpasses, the country’s first dedicated animal crossing structures from March to December 2019, a study by Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, says. Tiger, spotted deer, wild boars, hare, and jungle cat were among the first animals caught under the systems, and are frequently captured, according to the results.
Tiger scientist Bilal Habib, who suggested the mitigation measures, said, “The monitoring exercise has shown that these crossing structures contribute to improving the permeability of the landscape. Such mitigation measures, if adopted, would help defragment fragmented landscapes.
WWI Report: 18 wild animal species use underpasses The report, based on March-Decece camera trap survey data According to the WII report, spotted deer, wild boars and wild dogs were the most frequent users of these underpasses besides tigers and leopards. Jungle cat, mongoose, common palm civet, small Indian civet, Indian hare, rusty spotted cat, and porcupine were among the other animals.
“By the mitigation structures, 89 tiger crossings have been recorded until 31 December. These crossings correspond to 11 individual tigers, which are regular users of the underpasses too, “says the report. Nine wildlife protection systems have been built along a 16.1 km stretch of the NH-7 passing through forests adjacent to the Pench Tiger Reserve and entering the Pench-Navegaon-Nagzira tiger corridor as suggested in the May 2015 WII-NTCA Joint Report. “The initial outcomes of monitoring NH-7 mitigation measures are very promising. We have recorded 5,381 captures of 18 wild animal species from these underpasses, the most frequent use of which was made by jungle cat, hare, chital, wild pig, wild dog and tiger, “tiger scientist Bilal Habib said.
