Scientists continue sequencing of Covid viral genomes

Nagpur:- It is important to get sufficient knowledge about the virus to win the battle against Covid-19’s global pandemic. To this end, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has initiated an ‘SEQ-Mission’ aimed at sequencing over 500 viral genomes from Covid.

Covid-19 is caused by a coronavirus, whose genetic material is RNA (ribonucleic acid), and not DNA. The virus is pathogenic according to scientists as it has some commands in its RNA that allow it to bind to humans.

Through using the sequencing method, it is possible to read the commands on a genome which is the entire gene set of a living organism. The SEQ-Mission method was compiled by Atya Kapley, senior lead scientist at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri), which is a constituent CSIR laboratory.

The compilation notes that genome sequencing will include the virus’ blueprint and help in the creation of improved clinical care systems. “The SEQ-Mission will concentrate on sequencing the viral genome from samples obtained from every part of the world. Through the number of samples, the better the interpretation of pathogenesis would be, “he said.

Kapley has told us that the country has already sequenced 28 Covid virus genomes. “CSIR plans to do 500 in four weeks’ time. There are samples of viruses from different positive patients. And if we do pan India we will see more clearly what kind of strains we are being contaminated with, “she added.

The additional said the sequencing would be carried out in-house at CSIR-IGIB (Delhi) and CSIR-CCMB (Hyderabad). Both institutes claim to have the sequencing facilities needed.

Highlighting the need to research more samples to battle the disease, the compilation said, “Much like the human genome project where it was important to sequence all races and populations recognize the similarity in our DNA as well as the specific characteristics of each race, in the case of Covid the same is important. It will help scientists understand why certain people are more vulnerable to different diseases, why some are safe, and so on.

Similarly, we need to sequence the virus through various regions of the world in order to understand variants, otherwise, we won’t be able to develop foolproof drugs and recognize how the virus is binding on human receptors. “The compilation added that mutations were found to be widespread in the SARS-CoV-2 genome (the coronavirus that caused Covid-19), adding that their protein expression is related to wi Mutations are variants of the original series.

“These clinical results are important to explain the many outbreaks that have occurred in various populations. There are three major recognized lineages for beta-corona virus (Lineages A-B-C), and lineage-B belongs to SARS-CoV-2. Such results have been possible from numerous tests, and are still being studied in many patients for respiratory infection, gastrointestinal, and CNS infection. It is therefore advisable to include several sequences and samples as India is second in the population of the world, “he said.

Highlighting the major advantages of sequencing the viral genome, Kapley said, “The most important consequence of the sequencing exercise is that it would reveal the genetic codes for viral pathogenesis and its lifecycle, its variants and binding patterns for drugs. All of these are important questions that need answers if we are to fight and conquer this pandemic.

NMC Strict on People Posting False Messages on Social Media

Nagpur:- In the case of false messages circulating on social media about the spread of the virus, the civic body in the town seems to be very strict. As mentioned, in the name of NMC chief Mr. Tukaram Mundhe, false news about Nag river being clean in the city was circulated over social media. According to sources, the fake message first appeared on 23 April with the NMC chief’s name informing the same.

The message came in the form of memes generated on NMC claiming that the low rate of contamination has made the city’s sewage water potable to everyone. It further said the NMC’s supply water will, therefore, be supplied from the city’s Nag River. On the other hand, when this message reached the NMC and its president, everyone found it to be fake news because none of those decisions were taken in the city to supply water from the Nag river as it is still polluted.

And NMC was swift to file a complaint against the man who posted this message to the Police on social media. According to sources, the complaint has been recorded at Sadar Police Stations against this fake news message with different parts of the IPC. The Police have earlier warned people not to spread the fake news on social media. They had said they would seriously punish anyone who indulges in the same. Stay tuned only with us to learn more about them, and others.

17 New positive cases, count rises to 126

Nagpur:- All satranjipura contact tested positive at the wanadongri quarantine center as per the sources late saturday night, reports of 17 people. For this 19 people tested positive in city on saturday.

With the latest growth, it has been told that the cases of the virus-borne disease are at 126 in the state’s second capital. The silver lining, however, is that 22 patients were successfully diagnosed with the disease and returned home.

Satranjipura’s cluttered region in nagpur continues to hit headlines with maximum corona patients coming from this hotspot. Both the district administration and the police are on their toes to tackle the crisis but the relief appears to be a far-fetched hope as every other day adds to the positive cases coming from the locality of satranjipura.

Autorickshaw drivers demand for bailout package

Nagpur updates: Faced with unparalleled confusion to earn a living and forced to the brink due to the lockdown, autorickshaw drivers under the banner of Vidarbha Autorickshaw Chalak Federation have requested a special bailout package and free food grains from chief minister (CM) Uddhav Thackeray.

The lockdown has prevented the plying of their vehicles by around 1 crore autorickshaw drivers across the state. In a memorandum to the CM, President Vilas Bhalekar of the Vidarbha Autorickshaw Chalak Federation said that in Nagpur there are 15 lakh permit holder autorickshaw drivers and five lakh driving license badge holders.

“Autorickshaw drivers earn day-to-day living. A significant number of drivers and their families are in a precarious situation but no package has been provided for them by either the state or the central government, “he said.

“The government must provide financial assistance to drivers who abide by the restrictions,” Bhalekar said, calling for other measures such as postponement of vehicle loan installments and tax rebate.

NMC readies 12 pvt hospitals for patients with corona

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has approved 12 private hospitals for the care of Covid-19 positive patients should there be a further rise in infection cases. Such hospitals can be brought into use by the civic body sometime after April 27.

On April 21 that municipal commissioner Tukaram Mundhe had ordered 13 private hospitals to be ready to treat Covid-19 positive patients.

In this regard, Mundhe released a notification on 23 April. The NMC plans to establish ready government and private hospitals with a total capacity of 5,000 beds. The room at IGGMCH and GMCH, in the current situation, is about 220 beds.

The civic chief told that after capacity at government hospitals is depleted, private hospitals will be placed into service as Covid-19 centers. “Be prepared for whatever situation needs to be,” he said.

The 12 hospitals on NMC’s list each have 100 beds or more. In addition, 29 more hospitals with a capacity of 50-100 beds have been identified and will be available for use in the event of 12 notified hospitals.

The NMC is also planning 7,000-bed institutional quarantine facilities, with 1,500 beds in the first phase. For 41 private hospitals dedicated to Covid-19 patients, the NMC also aims to alert several other private hospitals for other forms of diseases as non-Covid-19 centres.
