Water at Laxmi Nagar, D’peth ‘ unfit for drinking ‘

Nagpur: Contrary to the popular belief that tony localities were Laxmi Nagar and Dharampeth, 27 out of 31 water samples found unfit for human consumption in all 10 urban areas were from these two areas. Nevertheless, the waterworks department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation can heave a sigh of relief as almost 92% of the 381 water samples collected from across the city in December of last year have been found fit for drinking. The Water Works Department (WWD) conducted the experiment last year by Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) against the backdrop of water testing in metro cities.

NMC Water Works Department Executive Engineer Shweta Banerjee told TOI that with the aid of the Regional Public Health Laboratory and Government Medical College and Hospital in the city, the department carried out the tests.

The Department identified 381 water sampling points in the 10 zones of the city covering the entire city as a first move. The team subsequently obtained samples from five raw water sources, protected 184 slum areas and outlets of 64 elevated reservoir storages and 128 sites other than slums strictly in compliance with standard operating procedures. The samples have been tested on 19 criteria in the RPHL, including turbidity, hardness, chlorine, colour check and odour, etc. “Out of the 381 samples 350 were satisfactorily tested and 31 were unsatisfactory,” Banerjee said.

“The water provided by the NMC is potable and if the residents ensure that their sumps or tanks are cleaned regularly, they can drink water directly from the tap,” she added.

While areas of Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, and Lakadganj are notorious for illegal connections, samples tested from these locations have been found perfectly fine. In the Dharampeth district, the highest number of contaminated water samples was found. The tests here showed 17 different spots in which residents get contaminated water in their taps. Laxmi Nagar Zone followed. Here, as the samples were collected, ten sites were found where residents obtained contaminated water from the taps.

The samples were collected in Dharampeth zone one day after shut down declared to do some repair work. The analyses detected no chlorine content in any of the 17 samples. Banerjee said the source of pollution in the sewerage network and water pipeline was leakage about Laxmi Nagar district.

Under Gandhibagh zone, Nehru Nagar zone, Hanuman Nagar zone, and Dhantoli zone one each unfit water sample was found. The study has also shown that the majority of slum dwellers get safe water. Only 12 of the 184 samples were deemed unfit.

In addition to this, the company entrusted with 24×7 water supply and maintenance Orange City Water routinely collects water samples and checks the consistency. To a question, Banerjee said the response time to every pollution complaint received was significantly reduced.

“Whenever a complaint is received, we collect samples immediately, supply to the area is stopped and water is distributed via tankers. We flush out the network after rectifying the fault, and then tax it. Samples are again collected, and we recover the supply only if the pollution is removed, “she said.

38.09 percent of NMC polls, which are counted today

An abysmal 38.09 percent poll was recorded on Thursday during the by-election for prabhag number 12(D). Of the total 58,162 voters, their franchise was exercised by just 21,151. The counting will take place on Friday at the Dharampeth area office of NMC, Gokulpeth, from 10 am. Five contestants were in the fray — Ashok Dorlikar, Praful Ganvir from Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh, Vikram Gwalbanshi from BJP, Akash Kawle from AAP, and Pankaj Shukla from Congress. After the death of four-time corporator Jagdish Gwalbanshi, a Sai Nagar resident, the by-election was required. The election passed peacefully and there was no incident that was untoward. A mere 6 per cent polling was registered during the first two hours. Also in the later part of the day there was a similar trend with the percentage not climbing every two hours to more than 5 percent. There are 30,235 male and 27,927 female voters in the ward. But there were only 11,948 male voters and 10,203 female voters. Officials blamed the poor show for bypolls on official working day apart from low enthusiasm among the masses. In the prabhag, the civic body had built 50 polling booths. BJP had chosen Vikram Gwalbanshi, the deceased corporator’s son, while Congress had chosen Pankaj Shukla, whose parents had also previously represented the district, Surendra and Nilima. The bypoll is not contested by the NCP and Shiv Sena. The dismal turnout of voters was because several voters in the city do not take bypoll as such seriously. “There should have been far better mobilization of workers and voters from our side too,” said the office-bearer of the BJP. Nevertheless, Congress staff pointed out that the turnout might have been higher if there had been a holiday like other surveys.

Aapli Buses Face poor maintenance is now facing NMC’s frustration

Public transport has always had a problem with the City. With the advent of Aapli Buses on the roads, however, there seemed to have come in many ways as a ray of hope as they catered for the growing need of the same. It seems, however, that the Aapli Buses are also facing a bad time in supplying them with proper maintenance. The shabby roads and poor bus maintenance appear to have made the operators face the irritation of Nagpur’s civic body–the NMC.

Given the condition of the buses, it seems that the Aapli buses are faltering on the maintenance aspect that made the NMC charge the Rs 15 lakh fine. At the same time, the two lakhs were also levied on the group called DIMTS for failing to make sure the city busses are kept in the proper order just to have a good time for the people. The buses acted in accordance with Narendra Borkar, Chairperson, Department of Transport, NMC’s directives.

Together with the other civic officials, he carried out the inspections of city buses as well as enforcing the huge fines on the operators that helped to ensure that the buses that are seen are kept in the right condition. Many vulnerabilities came to the attention of last Friday’s checks and balances. The fines were levied for violation of the terms of the contract. We also experienced a major set of backs with inadequate bus maintenance, including major damage that would require heavy repairs.

Many roads damaged within a week of getting repaired

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has failed to learn lessons and continued shoddy road repair works, prompting strictures from the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. Within a week of being restored, several roads were lost. Beginning from the lake to HB Estate T-point, it has been in bad shape for the last couple of years. Every day, the road is experiencing huge traffic. The civic body began fixing potholes and bad surface layers throughout the area, either through its hot mix department or private agencies, after the strictures of HC. Accordingly, patchworks on Sonegaon Road were done by the NMC’s hot mix department from the start of the lake to HB Estate a week ago.

Last week, the city experienced a few days of medium to heavy rains. Gravels that are part of the asphalt have since begun to loosen up. Most of the repair work came off on Monday. Now, it looks like a huge amount of gravel has been dumped on the whole patch.

These patches now pose a threat to drivers. Gravel has accumulated along the roadside in a few areas, and the entire area has been modulated.

The situation on Sahakar Nagar Road, Jaiprakash Nagar Road and a couple of stretches of London Street is close. On the newly patched areas, even potholes have appeared in some locations.

Also damaged was the stretch from Amravati Road to MLA Hostel that passes through Priyadarshini Colony. The repair work was performed during October’s assembly elections.

The period of road works ‘ defect liability, including total asphalting and patchworks, is considered to be three years.

Earlier, similar complaints were made against NMC’s private agencies about inferior work quality. Most corporators said most of the NMC’s hot mix department’s asphalting work is satisfactory. But the same department repaired all the roads mentioned above.

The HC had acknowledged the report by TOI on bad roads that caused accidents. Hearing the PIL, the HC imposed strictures on the NMC and ordered the municipal commissioner to take stern action against the execution of shoddy works by officials and private agencies.

Nevertheless, the NMC has failed to improve road repair work quality. Ulhas Debadwar, chief engineer of NMC, made sure to look into the issue and ensure proper work efficiency.

How many illegal hoardings are there in town? The business department of NMC has no response

Nagpur: On Saturday, former mayor Pravin Datke expressed anxiety about the market department’s lack of attitude in providing information on the number of legal and illegal hoardings throughout the city. In view of its failure to curb illegal hoardings across the city, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is already facing a contempt petition.

The municipal administration had convened a hoarding committee meeting where Datke is an invitee while the chairman is additional municipal commissioner Ram Joshi.

The market department was to provide reports of both legal and illegal hoarding throughout the region. The department was unable to bring any action against the city’s defacing illegal hoardings. Even it has failed to provide details of legal hoardings throughout the city and for one year Datke had insisted on the details. Despite warnings, there was no need for the department to provide information at the meeting.

Datke also held two other meetings— drafting a proposal to move private travel beyond the city’s borders and projects under construction running and transition or private-public partnership.

Datke also pointed out that he was approached by many private bus operators with suggestions to build their own bus stops. After more than an hour of healthy discussion, Datke led the Civic Administration to invite citizens ‘ suggestions on the subject. As of January 6, the NMC will begin the process of accepting feedback from people and travel bus operators.

In the meantime, Mayor Sandip Joshi formed another committee headed by Senior BJP Corporator Sanjay Bangalore to ease rents from NMC’s owned market places.

The meeting was attended by regional transport officer (Nagpur City) Dinkar Manwar, senior inspectors from the traffic police zones — Jayesh Bhandarkar, Shailesh Sankhe, among others.

It has been addressed that moving the bus stops outside the city will cause passengers inconvenience. Therefore, the NMC must ensure that private travel bus stops are located within 5 km of the city that will pass outside the city limits.

Flash strike by employees hit the Nagpur garbage collection

Approximately 1,600 employees engaged in door-to-door rubbish collection and transport to Bhandewadi Dumping Yard left about 905 metric tons (MT) of a total of 1,255 MT in households and streets on Friday. Bhartiya Kamgar Sena extended the strike call, which was a result of delays in paying workers’ salaries by two operators — AG Enviro and BVG India — to Saturday. It will now rely on the workers whether to resume work or continue the strike, even as the operators have already paid their salaries. The two operators have taken over the work of Kanak Resources Management Ltd since 16 November. According to the unions, Kanak did not pay workers a salary of 15 days. New operators were supposed to pay workers wages by 7 December, but they also failed to do so. Approximately 800 workers from zones 1 to 5 working with AG Environ made a flash strike from the morning of Friday morning. Zone 6-10 staff under the BVG India started their work as usual. When they learned to strike in Zone 1-5, they also went on strike. The NMC sources told TOI that only 350 MT (27.8%) of the garbage could be transported to Bhandewadi. Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said the garbage collection and transport will start from 1 pm and will be normalized from Saturday. “The two operators have been warned of any such problems in the future. It is their responsibility to ensure that salaries are paid on time.NMC should do its best to release payments every month, but operators should not find reasons for delays in NMC payments, “he said. Additional municipal commissioner Ram Joshi said that only 40% of the garbage collection and transport had been affected. “We instructed the operators to continue to collect and transport until night,” he said. The NMC did not invoke the Authority. Sometimes, I guess, the last 15  days, sufficient notice of the employees and unions notices has not been taken. Congressman Praful Gudadhe said the workers were right to go on strike.  Workers are low and wages are important to them. They can not afford daily expenses if payments are postponed. They haven’t earned anything in the last two months.” After meeting with Bangar, union leader Suresh Talwekar said that the strike will begin on Saturday as employees have not earned the minimum wage. “Workers work in a filthy state and face serious health problems. They’re keeping the city clean. They should receive salaries and incentives on or before the 7th of each month, “he said.Bangar said the pay-related misunderstanding has been resolved. “Operators paid staff wages of 15 days. The salary for December is due to be paid in January. Workers wrongly believed it was a month’s salary that we made clear to them, “he said. Bangar’s refused strike will start on Saturday. “The problem has come to an end,” he said. Joshi said, “Some workers didn’t get a pay check on Friday because they couldn’t open the accounts. We told the operators to pay them by check on Saturday,” he said. Garbage could be seen dumped in huge quantities in various locations throughout the region. Citizens and business businesses could be seen dumping garbage at these sites because the collection did not take place in the morning.

NMC, road-concerting agencies without power pole change, infrastructure

Nagpur: In 2001, 47 roads had been widened by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) without shifting electric poles, transformers, etc., which later resulted in road damage. Through concretizing those roads without moving electric poles and utilities, the civic body and other government agencies are now repeating the same mistake.
A month ago, under the CM Special Fund, NMC concretized and extended a stretch of Sonegaon main road. On one side of the road on Sonegaon basti square, an electric transformer is now on the road.

A number of electric poles on the side of the old road are now in the carriageway on the same stretch. The stretch was about 9 meters wide earlier. Now the poles are covered completely by sheets of concrete pavers. They’re now a motorists threat.

At Sahakar Nagar, it’s the same. Here a six-meter wide path was concretized with blocks of pavers on either side for three metres. There are now many electric poles and a transformer in this extra three-meter field.
In Civil Lines, the situation on WCL Road is worse. MahaMetro is concretizing the stretch from the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) office to the WCL road T-point to Telangkhedi Hanuman Mandir to Futala lake with the help of funds approved by the State’s Public Works Department.

NMC to run women’s mobile toilet

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will use the old vehicles in the city bus fleet to ply mobile toilet for women called’ Ti Bus.’ Mayor Sandip Joshi told this during a meeting with civil body officials at the NMC’s Central Office. He ordered the abandoned old busses to be used to build women’s toilets, and the same should be used in marketplaces. The meeting was attended by Dr. Pradeep Dasarwar, Health Officer (Cleanliness), Yogesh Lunge, Mechanical Engineer, Department of Transport, Shekhar Kant and Sandip Jat, both from Saraplast Enterprises.

One major complaint from women during his discussion with people was about the lack of public washrooms in marketplaces, which is a massive problem for them. Taking note of this, Mayor stepped into brass tracks and conveyed the meeting, saying that such mobile toilet buses should be deployed on the weekly market. Two or three buses will initially be converted and soon be stationed in suitable locations in the city. At Rahate Colony T-point, one bus would be deployed, and Mayor said 50 such mobile toilets are expected to be installed by changing NMC’s old buses. The buses would have a lady’s washroom facility, and a cafeteria is also expected to be fitted in the design in which they can make use of tea, snacks, Kant said, informing civil officials about the’ Ti Bus ‘ concept.

Naik Talao cleaning mission started by NMC

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in conjunction with National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has recently determined to start the improvement of lakes and also the 1st lake to wash within the town is Naik Talao. NMC had planned a rejuvenating project beneath that lakes like Futala and Naik talao are cleansed. Civic Chief Abhijeet Bangar throughout a press meet same “an elaborated Project Report (DPR) has been submitted by the officers of NEERI on that the NMC has taken a leap forward and have started acting on it”. It is found that a sewer main has a gap within the lake that is that the reason that the water of Naik talao has been dirty for thus several months. a call for participation was created by the civic body to NEERI for a higher arrange of overcoming the matter of waste matter line at the talao. Considering the problem NEERI has asked NMC to divert the waste matter water. Naik talao may be a well-known lake within the city; it’s additionally a lake that maintains the bottom water level of the town.
