Wathoda Hospital Nagpur: 300-Bed Government Facility Enters Final Stage of Construction

One of East Nagpur’s most anticipated public health projects is approaching its completion milestone. The Wathoda hospital Nagpur 300 bed construction 2026 project, being built by the Nagpur Improvement Trust, has entered its final construction stages. The nine-storey multispeciality government hospital is being built at a cost of Rs 187.71 crore on a two-acre NIT plot in front of the Jagewar Chandmari Temple in Wathoda. Once complete, it will be the first government hospital serving the large residential and industrial population of East Nagpur.
Why Was the Wathoda Hospital Needed?
For decades, residents of Wathoda, Kalamna, Zingabai Takli, and surrounding areas in East Nagpur had no government hospital within close proximity. All government hospital facilities were concentrated in the central and western parts of the city. Patients from this part of Nagpur had to travel significant distances to reach GMCH, IGMCH, Daga Hospital, or AIIMS Nagpur for any serious medical treatment.
The absence of a government hospital in this densely populated part of the city had been raised repeatedly by local residents, former corporators, and elected representatives. MLA Krishna Khopde was the driving force behind the project. He championed the cause consistently until it was sanctioned. Dr Manojkumar Suryavanshi, then Chairman of NIT, prepared and forwarded the detailed project report to the state government. The Maharashtra government approved the project and committed 100 per cent of the project cost from state funds.
What Is the Current Construction Status?
The Wathoda hospital project has made substantial progress in recent months. Construction workers have completed both basement levels and have laid the slab for the upper floors of the nine-storey structure. The structural work is progressing at a strong pace according to NIT officials overseeing the site.
NIT has already disbursed Rs 43.07 crore towards construction costs to date. The remaining works including flooring, interior finishing, electrical and plumbing installations, medical gas pipeline, lift installation, and external facade work are now entering execution. The project is being implemented under NIT’s expanded capital works programme, which saw an 83 per cent increase in budget allocation during the 2025-26 financial year.
What Facilities Will the Hospital Offer?
The completed facility will be a full-service multispeciality government hospital with 300 beds spread across a nine-storey building. The hospital has been designed to offer general medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and emergency care services. It will also house an intensive care unit, operation theatres, a diagnostic laboratory, an X-ray and imaging unit, and an outpatient department.
The building design incorporates solar power generation on the rooftop, green construction standards, a dedicated fire safety system, and basement parking for patients and visitors. The hospital has been planned as a modern, patient-friendly facility that meets current government hospital norms on accessibility, hygiene, and safety.
How Will It Reduce Pressure on Nagpur’s Major Hospitals?
Nagpur’s existing government hospitals — GMCH, IGMCH, AIIMS Nagpur, and Daga Hospital — are consistently operating at or beyond their capacity. Patients arriving from East Nagpur add to this burden significantly every day. Once Wathoda Hospital becomes operational, a large share of routine outpatient cases, maternity cases, and general medical admissions from East Nagpur will be absorbed locally. This will meaningfully reduce the daily patient load on the city’s four major government hospitals and improve the quality of care available to all patients across the system.
What About the Indora Hospital Project?
The Wathoda Hospital is part of a twin hospital initiative by NIT. The second project is an even larger facility at Indora in North Nagpur, planned with a capacity of 857 beds at an estimated cost of Rs 575.79 crore. The Indora project was in the bid evaluation stage as of earlier this year. Together, the two hospitals will add 1,157 new government hospital beds to Nagpur’s public health infrastructure and bring the total number of government multispeciality hospitals in the city to six.
What Does This Mean for East Nagpur Residents?
For the residents of East Nagpur, the completion of Wathoda Hospital will be a transformative development. Access to free government healthcare — including emergency services, maternity care, and specialist consultations — at a location close to home will make a direct and meaningful difference to the lives of thousands of families in this part of the city.
The project represents a long-overdue correction to the historically unequal distribution of public health infrastructure across Nagpur’s different zones.
