Gandhi Sagar Lake Nagpur: Rs 6.52 Crore Viewing Gallery and Musical Fountain Coming Soon

Gandhi Sagar Lake Nagpur musical fountain: Gandhi Sagar Lake in Nagpur is getting a major upgrade. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation is set to approve Rs 6.52 crore for a new viewing gallery, pathway and landscaping work around the lake. Furthermore, a musical fountain is already being installed at the site. As a result, Gandhi Sagar Lake is on its way to becoming one of Nagpur’s most attractive public destinations.

The Standing Committee meeting on Friday will give final administrative approval to this estimate and invite tenders. Moreover, the Chief Engineer of NMC has already granted technical approval to the project. Therefore, construction work on the ground is expected to begin very soon after the Standing Committee clears the proposal.

The Full Phase 2 Plan — Rs 11.67 Crore of Work

Gandhi Sagar Lake’s beautification is happening in two phases. Furthermore, Phase 1 — covering the eastern and northern sides and the inner portion of the lake — has already been completed successfully.

Phase 2 will now take the project to its next level. The total cost of Phase 2 is Rs 11.67 crore. Moreover, this phase has three main components that will transform the lake into a complete leisure and tourism destination.

The first component is the musical fountain. Furthermore, NMC’s electricity department is already in the process of installing the fountain. As a result, Gandhi Sagar Lake will soon join Futala and Ambazari as Nagpur lakes with world-class water features.

The second component is the viewing gallery. A modern spectator gallery will be constructed specifically so that visitors can comfortably watch the musical fountain shows. Furthermore, project consultant Messrs Amigo Projects has prepared a detailed estimate of Rs 6,52,80,720 for this gallery along with the pathway and civil works. Therefore, the viewing experience for Nagpur residents will be significantly better than simply standing at the lakeside.

The third component is the pathway connecting Natik Chowk to the lake premises, along with surrounding landscaping and beautification work. Moreover, this pathway will improve pedestrian access to the lake from one of the area’s key junctions. As a result, more residents from the surrounding neighbourhood will be able to easily reach the lake and its new facilities.

The Total Investment in Gandhi Sagar Since 2022

The current Phase 2 work is part of a much larger investment in Gandhi Sagar Lake. Furthermore, the Maharashtra Government’s Urban Development Department had approved a total fund of Rs 49.82 crore for Gandhi Sagar beautification through a Government Resolution issued on November 10, 2022.

This investment was made under the scheme for “Development of Basic Facilities in Municipal Areas.” Moreover, the fund approval was sanctioned at the ministry level — reflecting the government’s serious commitment to transforming Nagpur’s lakes into genuine tourism assets. Therefore, Gandhi Sagar is not just receiving cosmetic improvements — it is getting a comprehensive, government-backed transformation.

Phase 1 utilised a significant portion of this allocation for the eastern and northern sides and internal lake areas. Phase 2’s Rs 11.67 crore covers the remaining portion of the sanctioned amount. As a result, the entire Gandhi Sagar beautification project — from the 2022 GR to the Phase 2 completion — represents a total investment of nearly Rs 50 crore in a single lake.

Where Is Gandhi Sagar Lake — Its Significance for Nagpur

Gandhi Sagar Lake is one of Nagpur’s older and more historically significant water bodies. Furthermore, it is located in the western part of the city — close to several residential and commercial areas. As a result, it serves a large catchment of Nagpur’s population as a public recreational space.

However, like several other Nagpur lakes, Gandhi Sagar had suffered from years of inadequate maintenance and beautification. Moreover, its potential as a leisure destination had been significantly underutilised compared to more prominent lakes like Futala and Ambazari.

The Phase 1 and Phase 2 investments are changing this entirely. Furthermore, with a musical fountain, a viewing gallery and proper landscaping, Gandhi Sagar will offer residents in the surrounding areas a high-quality public space that was previously unavailable to them.

How Gandhi Sagar Fits Into Nagpur’s Broader Lake Tourism Vision

The Gandhi Sagar beautification is part of a city-wide transformation of Nagpur’s lakes that Nagpur Updates has been tracking closely. Furthermore, the city has more than 9 major lakes — and all of them are now receiving varying degrees of investment and attention.

Futala Lake, as we reported earlier, is getting a 250-unit Italian RGBA LED musical fountain with a 1,200-seat viewing gallery — and is nearly ready for public launch. Moreover, Ambazari Lake has been freed from water hyacinth and CM Fadnavis has announced boating there. Sonegaon Lake has undergone deepening and cleaning.

Gandhi Sagar’s musical fountain and gallery add another important piece to this ecosystem. Moreover, its location in the western part of the city — away from Futala and Ambazari in the north — means that residents of the western neighbourhoods will have their own world-class lakeside destination within easy reach.

What Happens After the Standing Committee Approves

The Standing Committee meeting on Friday is the final formal step before work begins. Furthermore, once the Rs 6.52 crore estimate receives administrative approval, the Public Health and Engineering Department will immediately begin the tender process.

As the Chief Engineer has already granted technical approval, there should be no delay in issuing the tender. Moreover, given the current construction season — with the monsoon ending in September — work on the viewing gallery and pathway can begin quickly once the contractor is appointed.

The musical fountain installation through NMC’s electricity department is already underway. Furthermore, if the fountain installation and the gallery construction proceed in parallel, Gandhi Sagar Lake could be ready for public events before the end of 2026.
