Pench Tiger Reserve Solar Boat Safari 2026: Two Solar Boats to Transform Wildlife Tourism

Pench Tiger Reserve is adding a thrilling new experience to its wildlife tourism calendar. From October 1, 2026, visitors to PTR can enjoy a Pench Tiger Reserve solar boat safari 2026 along the Pench river from the Kolitmara gate. Two premium solar-powered boats, each carrying 24 passengers, have arrived from Kerala and are now ready for the new tourism season. The eco-friendly safari covers 28 kilometres of pristine river wilderness and combines wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and history in one unique experience.

What Is the Solar Boat Safari at Pench?

The solar boat safari is a new eco-tourism initiative launched by the Pench Tiger Reserve management. Two state-of-the-art solar and battery-powered catamaran boats will carry tourists along the Pench river, deep into a relatively unexplored section of the reserve.

The safari begins at the Kolitmara gate of Pench Tiger Reserve. The full route covers 28 kilometres along the Pench river. The boats operate silently, producing zero noise and zero emissions. This means wildlife along the riverbank remains completely undisturbed during the journey. Tourists can observe animals, birds, and riverine ecosystems in their most natural state without the intrusion of engine noise or exhaust fumes.

What Are the Two Route Options?

Pench Tiger Reserve has designed two route options to suit different visitor preferences and available time.

The shorter route covers 8 to 10 kilometres from Kolitmara to Nandpur or Nagaragota, with a resting stop at the Nandpur protection hut. This option is ideal for visitors who want a taste of the river safari experience without committing to the full journey.

The longer route extends the full 28 kilometres from Kolitmara all the way to Kuwara Bhimsen, near the Navegaon-Khairi reservoir. This complete route offers the most immersive experience of the Pench river wilderness, passing through dense forest cover and reaching deep into the buffer zone of the reserve.

What Makes These Solar Boats Special?

The two boats deployed at Pench Tiger Reserve are premium solar-electric catamarans procured from Navalt Solar and Electric Boats Pvt Ltd, a Cochin-based company that is one of India’s leading manufacturers of hybrid and solar-electric marine vessels.

Each boat has a seating capacity of 24 passengers with comfortable seating arrangements. The vessels are powered by twin independent battery packs delivering a total capacity of 40 kWh, supplemented by a 3 kW rooftop solar plant. This combination allows the boats to operate for up to five hours at a cruising speed of 6 knots on a single charge.

Each boat is 12 metres long. The Mako Fury pod propulsion system provides high reliability and a quiet, vibration-free ride. Local youth from communities near the reserve have been trained in operating, charging, and maintaining the boats. All technical inspections and third-party safety checks have been completed before the October 1 launch.

What Will Tourists Experience Along the Route?

The Pench river corridor offers a dramatically different perspective of the tiger reserve compared to the conventional jeep safari. Tourists on the solar boat can expect sightings of crocodiles basking on riverbanks, a wide variety of resident and migratory birds including kingfishers, herons, eagles, and cormorants, deer and other wildlife coming to the river to drink, and dense riverside forest canopy that is inaccessible by road.

The Pench river also passes near historically significant sites within the forest. The route connecting Kolitmara to Kuwara Bhimsen weaves through terrain that inspired Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, making it a journey that connects natural beauty with literary heritage.

Why Is This Initiative Important for Eco-Tourism?

Pench Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Akshay Gajbhiye explained the thinking behind the initiative clearly. He said the solar boat safari will allow tourists to explore the region’s rich biodiversity without disturbing its sensitive ecosystem. The aim is to promote environment-friendly tourism in a part of the reserve that has remained relatively unexplored until now.

The solar boats produce no noise or air pollution. This is critical in a tiger reserve where even minor disturbances can alter animal behaviour and disrupt daily movement patterns. By offering a clean and silent mode of transport, the PTR management has found a way to open a new corridor for tourism without compromising the reserve’s core conservation mandate.

The Kolitmara gate, from where the solar boat safari will operate, is accessible by road from Nagpur in under two hours.
